The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, over allegations of ₦80.2 billion fraud.

Bello was taken into custody on Tuesday, November 26, after presenting himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

Confirming the arrest, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said, “It is true that we have him in our custody. The operatives of the Commission arrested him.”

The EFCC declared Bello wanted on April 18, 2024, following charges of money laundering and misappropriation of public funds.

The ex-governor reportedly arrived at the EFCC office in the company of his legal team to address the allegations.

His detention marks a significant turning point in the case, as for months, he ignored repeated invitations by the anti-graft agency.

Interestingly, Kogi State’s current governor, Usman Ododo, who had previously accompanied Bello to the EFCC office during an earlier visit, was absent from Tuesday’s proceedings.

The EFCC’s investigation centres on the alleged laundering of ₦80.2 billion during Bello’s tenure as governor.

The case has drawn public attention, given the magnitude of the allegations and Bello’s previous defiance of the Commission’s summons.

IPOB has been crippled in South-East, now exists in peoples' imagination – Police

The Nigerian Police said the proscribed group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been severely degraded in the South-East region.

The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in charge of zone 9, Umuahia, Kanayo Uzuegbu, disclosed this during his official visit to the Ebonyi State Police Command on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

He said IPOB’s activities in the region are dying off, calling on the people of the zone to get on with their daily business without fear of any attack or intimidation.

However, the AIG warned police personnel to desist from any act that could damage the force’s image, stressing that their primary responsibility remains the protection of lives, property, and others as stipulated by law.

He also advised officers always to conduct themselves ethically and refrain from extorting road users and residents.

“Our police job is a law established by the constitution. We have a fundamental duty to do. It is a duty by law to secure our land. So, in professionalism, you have to work according to these duties,” Uzuegbu said.

“Unethical conduct is not allowed. You have to do your job as stipulated by law. It has to be done by fact, not fancy.

“It’s unprofessional to extort road users and residents. And the authority of the police is against that.

“We are trying to put our house in order and ensure that things are done very well. I want to let you know that the police job, too, is not a foreign importation.

“Generally, we have to be professional and excited about what we do.

IPOB degraded in the South-East

The Police boss credited officers for ensuring that IPOB activities have been crippled in the region, pledging to build up their capacity and confidence to ensure continued success.

He noted that the group has been severely decimated, with most of their enclaves and hideouts overrun and dismantled by police, adding that IPOB now only exists in people’s imagination.

“IPOB involvement in the southeast is dying off. Our policemen are doing a fantastic job. As I said in my lecture, I came here to interface with them, to build their capacity, to build their confidence. I want to thank them,” he stated.

“When I build up this, they will do more. We are doing very magic, though. We have most of their enclaves overrun and dismantled them.

“When we go against them, we will raid all of them, carry our war against any of them. I would like to say that all those thoughts of IPOB exist only in our imagination and the minds of people who are afraid of the unknown.

” In that sense, people should go and do their job and carry on their businesses. If we are able to identify them, we have to deal with them ruthlessly. We have to be focused, take charge of our area.”

2027: Only a strong Northern candidate can challenge Tinubu – Dele Momodu

Published

Dele Momodu and Bola Tinubu 1746021090

Former presidential candidate and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has stressed the importance of presenting a formidable Northern candidate to effectively challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.Speaking on Arise TVs The Morning Show on Wednesday, April 30, Momodu critiqued the current state of Nigerian politics, lamenting the decline of principled discourse and the rise of opportunism. He described Nigerian politics as an optical illusionmuch like magic, the more you look, the less you see.Momodu expressed concern that many politicians prioritise personal gain over the common good.He highlighted the strategic importance of the North in presidential elections, noting that the region feels marginalised under Tinubus administration, with claims of  perceived favouritism towards Southern allies.According to Momodu, this discontent could energise Northern voters, making it crucial for the opposition to field a strong candidate from the North in order to unite and mobilise widespread support. He asserted, I believe Tinubu can only be effectively countered by another strong candidate from the North.Any Southerner who thinks they can challenge Tinubu is likely wasting their time. The PDPor any coalitionmust recognise that power dynamics require strategic thinking. They cannot expect success with a Southern candidate alone if they truly wish to contest Tinubus position. Momodu suggested that a united frontincluding influential Northern figures like Senator Rabiu Kwankwasocould bolster the oppositions chances. We are witnessing a split within the PDP. Half of its members are involved in coalition talks, while the other half remain loyal to the party. This creates confusion. I recently spoke with our governor in Bauchi, who believes we shouldnt abandon the PDP but should instead work to attract others to it. However, if the PDP resists change and chooses to remain stagnant, what options remain? A collapse of the party might need to be considered.Historically, many parties have faded away. Look at the UPN or the NPNwhere are they now? Even the AD, which started in Lagos, has all but vanished. The PDP could be on a similar path unless significant reforms are undertaken. While defending Atiku Abubakars integrity, Momodu stated, I saw people in Delta celebrating their alignment with the mainstream, but I wonder what tangible benefits have been delivered to the people over the years. For two decades, PDP founding members have been trying to connect with the populaceakin to linking electricity to the national gridyet the results remain elusive. The claim that Atiku will join the APC is simply implausible; I can guarantee that. The APC itself is riddled with internal problems, lacking the discipline or cohesion to address critical issues. The post 2027: Only a strong Northern candidate can challenge Tinubu Dele Momodu appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
