Oba of Benin urges NDLEA to explore medical potentials of marijuana

Oba of Benin urges – Earlier, the NDLEA boss…
Earlier, the NDLEA boss commended the Oba for his timely interventions and requested his prayers for the agency’s personnel to achieve their mandate.
The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has charged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to carry out research on the active ingredients in cannabis, otherwise called Marijuana.
The Oba gave the charge on Thursday, when the Edo Sector Commander of NDLEA, Alumona Obioma, and his management team visited his palace.
He said that the research should aim to uncover the potential breakthroughs in disease treatment and other medical applications, leveraging the medicinal properties of cannabis as utilised in other countries, including Israel.
He recommended that the agency and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) prioritise research and development to combat drug crimes, drawing inspiration from countries like Israel and the United States.
“By focusing on research and development, these agencies would uncover new ways to address drug-related issues and improve their effectiveness in fighting drug crimes,” the Oba said.
He frowned at the unauthorised sale of prohibited drugs in medicine stores, pharmaceutical companies, and other drug cartels in Nigeria.
He pledged to leverage his diplomatic experience to lead advocacy against drug crimes and promised traditional institutions’ support for NDLEA.
“In Israel, they study cannabis for medical use. I’m unsure if Nigeria’s health sector has developed this.
“You may wish to explore this proposal for medical use, as it can cure many things, according to the Israelis,” he said.
Earlier, the NDLEA boss commended the Oba for his timely interventions and requested his prayers for the agency’s personnel to achieve their mandate.
He expressed concern over the deplorable road network and logistics challenges hindering NDLEA operatives in their fight against drug crimes.
“These challenges ultimately contribute to social vices, like addiction, internet fraud, cultism, and violent crimes.
“We must bring our youths back. Our parents taught us well, but these ones seem untutored.
“It’s our collective duty to inform our people about the dangers of drug crimes.
“Between March and now, five drug users have undergone rehabilitation.
“Our major problem is poor mobility due to difficult terrain and the lack of suitable vehicles,” Obioma said.

Pope’s funeral ‘being rehearsed after warning he may not survive pneumonia’

The Pope’s funeral is allegedly being rehearsed after the 88-year-old warned he may not survive pneumonia. The Swiss Guard protecting the Pope, 88, is rehearsing his funeral, with members under a curfew as they are ‘preparing for the pontiff’s death’, Swiss newspaper Blick claims. The Pope previously revealed he had ‘already prepared’ his tomb, but the location of his grave and the coffin itself would break with tradition. This comes after Pope Francis was rushed to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday with significant chest pain, having resisted calls to leave the Vatican for days. Doctors diagnosed him with a ‘complex’ respiratory infection and barred him from taking part in several engagements, with the Vatican cancelling or rescheduling his papal audiences this week. The Vatican on Tuesday confirmed the pneumonia and said Francis’ respiratory infection also involves asthmatic bronchitis, which requires the use of cortisone antibiotic treatment. ‘Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture,’ the Vatican said. The infection is of particular concern because the Pope had part of his lung removed many years ago. Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri, 81, told broadcaster Rai about the Pope’s condition: ‘Francis is very calm. His helm is in the hands of the Lord.’ Now, two people close to the pontiff have claimed Francis told them that he ‘might not make it this time’, according to a report by Politico. People have now reportedly travelled to the Gemelli Hospital in western Rome where Pope Francis is being treated to pray for him. On Monday, medical personnel determined that he was suffering from a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, meaning a mix of viruses, bacteria, and possibly other organisms had colonised in his respiratory tract and led to double pneumonia. The Vatican hasn’t provided any information about how Francis is responding to any of the drugs he has been given other than to say he isn’t running a fever. Dr Carmelo D’Asero, an infectious disease and geriatric disease expert in Rome, said Francis’ lack of fever was not necessarily a positive thing, given the seriousness of his infection. A high fever is a sign of an immune response to a pathogen,’ he said. ‘Having a low fever and having a serious bronchial infection .. is a sign of a decreased immune response and that makes us worry a little bit more, let’s say. ‘Maybe if he had a fever, it would have been better.’ The Vatican has given no indication of how long the pope might remain hospitalized, only saying that the treatment of such a ‘complex clinical picture,’ which has already required several changes in his drug regimen, would require an ‘adequate’ stay. Trouble in Benue Assembly as 13 members suspended for dishonourable acts

The Benue House of Assembly has suspended 13 house members from legislative duties due to dishonourable acts.
The suspension followed a motion by the majority leader, Saater Tiseer, during Wednesday’s plenary in Makurdi.
Like any other legislature, the majority leader stated that the assembly was a hallowed assembly of honourable personalities.
He said that 31 house members received a complaint on Tuesday from the office of the state’s attorney-general.
Tisseer said the complaint detailed allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, bribery and corruption and other sundry allegations against Justice Maurice Ikpambese, the state’s Chief Judge (CJ).
He informed the house that after exhaustive deliberations, the house went into division.
“Thereafter, 23 out of the 31 members present voted in support of the recommendation to remove Ikpambese as the Chief Judge of the state, while the next-in-line judicial officer should be sworn in as the acting Chief Judge of the state,” he said.
He said that after the House adopted resolutions on the matter, the 13 members, some of whom voted in support of the recommendations, disassociated themselves from the legislative process.
According to him, the action of the 13 members contravened the Standing Order 9, Rule 58 (6) of the house.
The rule, he said, provided that it shall be out of order to attempt to reconsider any specific question upon which the house had concluded during the current session except upon a substantive motion for rescission.
He said that the members’ actions were not only dishonourable but also an afterthought and a deceptive posture capable of causing acrimony and casting aspersions on the house.
He listed the names of the suspended members to include Mr Douglas Akya (APC/Makurdi South), Mr Jonanthan Agbidye (APC/Katsina-Ala East),
Mrs Beckie Orpin (APC/Gboko East), Mr Simon Gabo (APC/Mata), and Mr William Ortyom (PDP/Agasha).
Others are Mr Emmanuel Onah (PDP/Oju I), Mr Elias Audu (APC/Gwer East), Mr Anyor Matu (APC/Kwande East), Mr Manger Manger (APC/Tarka), Mr Solomon Gyila (APC/Gwer West), Mr Samuel Agada (APC/Ogbadibo), Mr Abraham Jabi (APC/Buruku) and Mr Ezra Nyiyongo (APC/Ukum).
The seconder of the motion, Mr Peter Ipusu (APC/Katsina-Ala West), said that their colleagues’ actions were outright mischief because they attended and participated actively in the debate.
Ipusu added that they voted in favour of the recommendations that the CJ be removed and want to deny their active participation in the matter.
He suggested that the suspended members should refund the money the Ministry of Finance gave them for a foreign trip, as they would not be travelling with them.
Meanwhile, Alfred Berger (APC/Makurdi North) said their colleagues had disparaged the Speaker, Mr Hyacinth Dajoh, and the house.
He said that before their suspension could be lifted, they should publicly declare they participated in the legislative process.
Also, Thomas Dugeri (APC/Kwande West) pleaded that the suspension be reduced to one month.

Peru initiates investigation after singer Shakira’s medical record was leaked

Peruvian authorities have launched an investigation and threatened sanctions after pop star Shakiras medical records were leaked on social media following her treatment at a Lima clinic. Officials warned the clinic could face fines of up to $430,000 for the breach. The 48-year-old Colombian singer was admitted to the emergency room on Saturday due to an abdominal condition, leading to the cancellation of her scheduled concert on Sunday, February 16. Shortly after her hospitalization, details of her medical report surfaced online, sparking public outrage and prompting an official probe. A spokeswoman for Perus national health service watchdog confirmed the investigation was underway, with officials meeting clinic representatives to discuss the breach. The process is expected to take 25 days. The Delgado Clinic, where Shakira was treated, condemned the leak as a serious ethical breach and announced internal disciplinary action against those responsible. Despite the incident, Shakira resumed her world tour, performing in Lima on Monday night. She expressed gratitude to her fans, thanking them for their love and care. Her tour, titled Las mujeres ya no lloran (Women Dont Cry Anymore), began in Rio de Janeiro shortly after she won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. The singer dedicated the award to migrants in the United States facing deportation under President Donald Trump. With over 90 million records sold worldwide, Shakira remains one of the most celebrated Latin artists of all time. The post Peru initiates investigation after singer Shakira’s medical record was leaked appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
