Marine Corps Bill faces opposition from lawmakers, security agencies, CSOs

Marine Corps Bill faces – The House Committee on…
The House Committee on Navy assured Nigerians that legislative due diligence would guide the Committee’s decision, underscoring its impartiality in evaluating the Bill.
The proposed Bill to establish the Nigerian Marine Corps (HB 225) has been met with fierce opposition from lawmakers, security agencies, and civil society organisations during a public hearing conducted by the House Committee on Navy.
The Bill, sponsored by Hon. Alex Egbona, aims to bolster maritime security and enhance the blue economy by creating a new federal body for maritime law enforcement and defence.
However, deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, joined 66 lawmakers in rejecting the proposal, citing its potential to duplicate functions and burden existing structures.
Agbese described the Bill as unnecessary, stating, “The creation of this new entity would only result in significant overlap, redundancy, and logistical strain, creating operational inefficiencies and imposing unwarranted financial demands on the government.”
He emphasised that the Nigerian Navy and other agencies like NIMASA are already adequately equipped to manage maritime security.
Police, CSOs reject proposed bill
The Nigeria Police Force also criticised the Bill, highlighting its risks of operational conflicts and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

“A more prudent approach would be to strengthen existing agencies and optimise their capabilities,” said SP Nandom Vongjen, who represented the Police at the hearing.

Representatives of the Nigerian Navy, including Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, and NIMASA officials echoed these sentiments. They advocated for bolstering the capacity of existing agencies rather than creating a new entity that could pose security and jurisdictional challenges.
Civil society organisations also voiced their disapproval, with Abdullahi Bilal of the Security Analysts & Research Forum in Africa describing the Bill as “unnecessary.” Other groups, including the Centre for Social Justice and the Nigerian Unemployed Youth Association, called for the Bill’s rejection, citing concerns over inefficiency and potential resource wastage.
Chairman of the House Committee on Navy, Hon. Yusuf Gadgi, assured Nigerians that legislative due diligence would guide the Committee’s decision, underscoring its impartiality in evaluating the Bill.
As debates continue, stakeholders argue for a focus on strengthening existing maritime frameworks rather than creating parallel institutions.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released controversial social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), from custody.
In a video posted on Instagram by blogger Tunde Ednut on the evening of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, VeryDarkMan can be seen sitting in the back of a car alongside his lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, at the wheel.
In the video clip, the activist characteristically laughed off insinuations that his arrest was connected to an alleged money laundering scheme.
He said he’s spending so much on charitable causes that some people begin to question where he gets the money from, unaware that he incurs debt in the process.
“Anyways, we’re outside. With my lawyer, of course,” he screamed ecstatically. “And you know what we do: We can never get inside when we have our lawyer by our side,” he continued.

FG plays Nnamdi Kanuâs broadcast, videos in court to establish alleged terrorism charge

The ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, continued on Wednesday May 7, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja with the Federal government prosecution counsel playing some of the Radio Biafra broadcast and videos made in open court to establish the allegation of terrorism preferred against him. The broadcast and video documents, which were marked as exhibits, were tendered through the 2nd prosecution witness (PW-2), identified as BBB, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The recordings were said to have featured statements allegedly made by Kanu during periods of national unrest, including the 2020 EndSARS protests and various security incidents in the South-East. According to reports, in one of the broadcasts, Kanu was reportedly heard lamenting Fulani herders attacks and accusing Nigerian governors of betraying the South-East region. He also reportedly made controversial remarks about prominent political figures, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The content of the broadcasts reportedly ranged from calls for self-defense to direct criticisms of perceived government failures. It was gathered that a key point of contention was the interpretation of the broadcasts, as while the prosecution argued that the statements incited violence and promoted secessionist agendas, Kanus defense team, led by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), maintained that the broadcasts were political expressions protected under constitutional rights.Travel guides The prosecutions witness, under examination, confirmed Kanus identity in the videos and attempted to link the broadcasts to violent incidents, including attacks on security facilities. However, when questioned on certain charges, the witness admitted being unaware that some of the said charges had been previously struck out by the court.A notable portion of todays hearing also centered around the 2017 proscription of IPOB. The defense made no objections to the admission of the proscription document but pointed out that the ban was imposed through an ex parte order without IPOBs legal representation. The court was also presented with a letter from the former Attorney General of the Federation directing Kanus arrest, a document which the defence insisted was not initially served to them. Justice Omotosho had earlier insisted that all evidence must be duly served to the defence in the interest of fair hearing. The trial was adjourned to Thursday, May 8, for continuation of the examination of prosecution witnesses.
