Zamfara govt given 5-day – Tsafe further decried that…

Tsafe further decried that the students were at risk of exploitation by employers due to the lack of legal documentation.

A Zamfara-based CSO, ‘Zamfara Circle Community Initiative’, has lamented the situation of the stranded Zamfara students in Cyprus and called on the state government to take tentative steps to address the problem.

The Chairman of the organisation, Dr Al-amin Tsafe, made the call at a press briefing in Gusau on Saturday.

Tsafe appealed to the state government to immediately commence the process of paying all the debts affecting the students.

He said, “We are in contact with various philanthropists and well-meaning individuals and organisations from within and outside the state who are willing to intervene and help to support the students.

“We believe the matter is the responsibility of government.”

According to Tsafe, as a CSO working to promote humanity, they cannot continue to watch while the lives of their children are in serious danger,

“Therefore, we give a 5-day ultimatum to the state government to take action before we embark on an appeal fund project to rescue the students.

“On the 17th of October 2024, we submitted a memorandum to the state government concerning the status of the state’s students stranded in Cyprus.

“That was to balance the information from the side of the government with what was obtained from other stakeholders including parents, CSOs and the students themselves, identify the gaps and advise the government where necessary.

“Till today, however, there is no response to that inquiry,” he said.

Tsafe, however, said that the problem was inherited from the previous government, adding, “We believe the business of governance is a continuum.

“We noted that the state government under Gov. Dauda Lawal made some moves to help the students.”

He lamented that the students still lacked proper accommodation and had to engage in menial labour to feed themselves.

Tsafe further decried that the students were at risk of exploitation by employers due to the lack of legal documentation.

“Their visas and passports have expired, for them to live in a foreign country without legal documentation puts their lives at risk of imprisonment and deportation.

“Already, one of the students had suffered this fate and was deported to Lagos in handcuffs and another one is still in prison.

“We urge the state government, as a matter of urgency, to provide those students with funds for upkeep and accommodation,” he appealed.

Tsafe urged that the state government should take tentative steps to renew their passports and visas so that they can live freely without fear of arrest, imprisonment or deportation.

“The state government should act urgently to save the students from being held in prison or deported.

“The government should use the figures generated from the students’ portals as the verified debt owed to the university by the state government.

“We appealed to the state government to take tentative steps to mitigate further occurrence of this problem,” he added.

NAN reports that Lawal, in a press release signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Sulaiman Idris, said the state government was taking plausible measures to resolve the issue.

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has declared that convicted kidnappers in the state will face the death penalty, specifically by hanging.

The Governor disclosed this at the stakeholders’ session at the Uromi Town Hall on Friday, April 18, 2025, expressing his readiness to sign the death warrant of convicts.

The meeting served as an interactive session between the Governor and leaders and members of the Arewa community in Esan land following the recent gruesome murder of 16 travelling Kano hunters.

According to Okpebholo, the Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill amending the Kidnapping Prohibition Act (and Related Matters) 2013.

He explained that the bill prescribes the death penalty for kidnappers and mandates the confiscation and demolition of properties used in the commission of their crimes.

The Governor, who read the riot act, said his administration will not tolerate killing, insecurity, and kidnapping anymore, promising to deal ruthlessly with all criminal elements in the state.

“I take the issue of insecurity seriously and will not bend the rules but apply them strictly. The new law in the State permits us to demolish their properties and confiscate their lands. We will build vigilante team offices on those lands.

“We will bring kidnappers to the public and execute them to show our seriousness according to the laws already passed by the EDHA. I will not be afraid to sign it,” he was quoted in a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Friday, April 18, 2025.

Okpebholo seeks stakeholders’ support

Okpebholo appealed to all stakeholders to collaborate with his administration to secure Edo State amid the recent rise in kidnapping incidents, which has raised concerns among residents.

“The kind of security we want to have in the State is one where security remnants women are paid salaries, unlike before, where the people will just put on uniforms without being paid. We are going to employ vigilante teams and pay them salaries, and stop people from just putting on their uniforms.

“These people will work with security agencies, and they will be trained on how to fight crimes and handle criminals. I will not wait until campaign time to solve your problems. I will start addressing the problems facing our people in the market and everywhere.

“It is time to start profiling people from other States who claim to be from the North and ensure they don’t spoil your name. We will fence the market, put streetlights, build abattoirs for those killing cows. We want to secure the people of Edo State.”

He stressed that President Bola Tinubu loves the North and has been very supportive to ensure that the Uromi killing didn’t degenerate into more destruction.
