Why celebrities should keep their political opinions private

Published

Why celebrities should keep their political opinions private. Yes, celebrities and influencers are citizens and political policies affect them, but they must also understand that they are not regular people. There are certain topics that are usually best avoided for the sake of their image and reception and politics is often one of them.

Celebrities wield significant influence over public opinion. Recognising this power means understanding the responsibility that comes with it, including the potential consequences of their statements. A celebrity’s entire brand and daily bread are dictated by how the public perceives them.

The recent backlash faced by Nigerian filmmaker Jade Osiberu serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of public political commentary and the fickle nature of public opinion. The fine line between love and hate is very thin and all it takes is one thing to make the public switch up on you in the blink of an eye, and let’s not forget about cancel culture.

Not once or twice, celebrities have been slammed for picking a side when it comes to politics, especially when their choice is not the popular one.

The first instance is Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham, who opened up about her political choice in 2023, endorsing President Tinubu as her choice, and things have not remained the same for her. Since she attested that Tinubu told her about his plans for the nation, she has faced backlash upon backlash at every corner on these social media streets. It got so bad that in June 2024, she broke down in tears after facing backlash for doubling down on her support for Tinubu.

Remember that she is a filmmaker and her entire livelihood depends on her viewership and ratings, so if she gets cancelled for her political stance, who would watch her movies? How would she feed? Getting cancelled can also lead to a decline in work opportunities and public support. It can lead to significant financial losses, impacting her income and lifestyle.

We also have Seyi Law, who had publicly supported Tinubu, who was elected President of Nigeria in the 2023 elections. This drew criticism from many people on social media, and beyond criticisms, threats!!! In May 2023, the comedian shared a highly offensive message a troll sent to his wife due to his political affiliation, threatening to kill their daughter. Threatening anyone is wrong, beyond a doubt, and the celebrity status makes it easy to hate on them.

Let’s not forget Eniola Badmus, another actress who is still facing the sting of sharing her political views in 2023. Just yesterday, October 1, 2024, she was dragged for wishing everyone a happy Independence Day, which led to a heated exchange of words in her comment section. All this because she publicly picked a side.

Recently, on September 13, 2024, Nigerian actress Mercy Johnson also came under fire on social media over a viral video of her at a political rally, encouraging the masses to vote for a candidate. This action did not go over people’s heads, and the love she usually received from Nigerians switched in an instant that day, why? Because she picked a side.

By staying neutral in public and keeping their political preferences private, celebrities can even create a space for open dialogue among their fans, encouraging discussions that include multiple perspectives without the weight of celebrity influence. They can also protect themselves and not leave themselves open to the repercussions of publicly endorsing politicians.

In conclusion, while celebrities undoubtedly have the right to express their political beliefs, it might be best for them to keep their choices to themselves.

‘She’s dying’ – Zicsaloma accuses LUTH of medical negligence towards his cancer-stricken mother

Nigerian comedian and content creator, Zicsaloma, has publicly condemned the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) over gross mistreatment and neglect of his mother, who is currently battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.

In a distressed Instagram video, the skit maker, real name Aloma Isaac Junior, detailed a harrowing ordeal, claiming that hospital personnel at LUTH refused to admit his critically ill mother despite the urgency of her condition.

According to him, she had recently developed severe post-chemotherapy complications that prompted a desperate dash to the hospital. But rather than receiving emergency care, she was allegedly denied access at the gate and left unattended.

“She’s a skeleton of herself,” he said emotionally. He revealed that when they arrived at LUTH, she was not only turned away but also made to wait for hours outside the gate. “Do you know when we took my mum to LUTH, the hospital refused to let her in?” he said. “They now pointed us to a test centre beside LUTH, where we should go and do it. We now took the result back to the hospital. They refused to let my mum in.”

According to him, the hospital claimed only a doctor could authorise entry. But when one was finally called to assess the situation, he “literally walked out,” refusing to assist. “She cannot even stand. I literally backed my mum.”

Zicsaloma slammed what he described as a lack of compassion in Nigeria’s medical system. “Our medical team, the doctors of Nigeria, are terrible.” He added, “If you see my mum, she is a skeleton of herself.”

Frustrated and heartbroken, the skit maker painted a grim picture of the situation. “If somebody is ill in this country, the person can just die. You are seeing a lifeless woman. That cannot stand.”

He concluded his emotional outcry with a strong criticism of the healthcare system, saying, “These hospitals, they need to be checked.”

‘There is no forgiveness’: Seyi Law on why he can never support Peter Obi

Nigerian stand-up comedian, Oluwaseyitan Lawrence Aletile, popularly known as Seyi Law, has said he can never support Peter Obi, presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections.

The funnyman made the revelation in a recent interview on the Teju Babyface show, saying the former Anambra State Governor can never have his forgiveness.

Seyi Law pinpointed the actions of Peter Obi’s supporters, the Obidients, as the reason why he holds a grudge against him.

He claimed Obidients insulted his wife and children because he backed President Bola Tinubu while Peter Obi stood by and refused to call them to order while also failing to admit that his supporters attacked those who did not support him.

He argued that the former Anambra governor’s “failure” to condemn the actions of his supporters makes him “unfit” for his support.

Furthermore, Seyi Law likened the Obidient movement to a “cult” that doesn’t “support free thinking”.

He added that Obidients crossed personal boundaries by going after his family and it is one thing he finds “unforgivable”.

“The moment you cross that boundary from me to my children, mother, and wife, there is no forgiveness. That is why there is nothing on earth that Peter Obi can do that will make me support him,” Seyi Law declared.

“They attacked my children and my wife. As long as Peter Obi does not call them to order and he keeps denying that they are doing that, he will never get my support. Let Peter Obi wear the garment of Jesus Christ today, he will never get my support.

“Hate or love me, my personal way of life is between me and God. Any organisation that does not support free thinking is a cult. I do not feel down at all because when you talk too much, I swear to you.

“One of the good things that God has done for me is that my anger does not last long. Personal anger for me does not last long. The only place it lasts long is when you leave me and attack my children, mother, and wife.”
