Gain Experience and Learn the Craft
I’m not sure there’s any other way to be a director without actually “learning how to be one.” While having a vision is essential, it’s equally important to build your skills and knowledge of filmmaking. In Nollywood, directors aren’t just responsible for the overall vision of the film; they also oversee many technical aspects, such as camera angles, lighting, sound, and editing.
Here’s the good news: You don’t need a fancy film school degree to get started in Nollywood. The industry thrives on hands-on experience, and many successful Nollywood directors have learned the ropes on the job. Start by gaining experience as an assistant director, a production assistant, or even in the editing room. These roles will allow you to get a feel for the inner workings of film production, while you observe more experienced directors in action.

Of course, if you do have access to formal training, whether through a film school or online courses, it certainly won’t hurt. Learning about scriptwriting, cinematography, lighting techniques, and sound design will give you a solid foundation for directing. If you’re passionate about it, dive deep into the history of film and learn the stories behind some of the most iconic Nigerian films.
Create a short film (even if it’s with your phone!). Experiment with directing techniques such as framing, lighting, and angles. Don’t worry about perfection, the goal is to practice and develop your own style.
Build Your Network – Make Connections in the Industry.
As with any film industry, Nollywood thrives on relationships. Building a network of filmmakers, producers, actors, and crew members is essential to your success. Getting to know the people who already have experience in the industry – from actors who know how to give you the best performance to cinematographers who understand the technical intricacies of film – can make or break a project.
Attend industry events, film festivals, and networking functions where you can meet people who share your passion. Nollywood is an industry built on collaborations, and being able to connect with the right people can lead to incredible opportunities. You don’t have to be a social butterfly, but being approachable, professional, and persistent will open many doors for you.
And don’t forget social media! They are crucial for keeping up with Nollywood news and trends. They also allow you to showcase your work and build a fanbase. You’d be surprised at how many opportunities have been sparked through online interactions.
Start Small – Direct Short Films and Independent Projects
While the dream may be to direct a feature-length film that plays in cinemas across the country, it’s important to start small. Many Nollywood directors began by directing short films or working on independent projects. These smaller-scale projects give you the freedom to experiment, refine your techniques, and build a body of work that showcases your abilities.
Short films are a great way to develop your storytelling skills within a shorter time frame. They also give you the chance to work on multiple aspects of filmmaking without the pressures of a big-budget production. Independent films are a perfect starting point because they often allow for creative freedom, and they help you gain the experience necessary to move on to larger projects.
Be Ready for the Challenges
The road to becoming a Nollywood director is filled with challenges. There will be moments of doubt, technical setbacks, tight budgets, and tight schedules. However, the ability to push through these challenges is what separates successful directors from those who give up. The industry demands flexibility, resilience, and creativity.
Never stop learning. Stay updated on trends in filmmaking, storytelling, and technology. Stay motivated by your passion, and remember why you wanted to direct in the first place — whether it’s to tell stories that matter, inspire others, or leave a lasting mark on the film industry.
Reflect on why you want to direct. Is there a specific story you want to tell or a message you want to convey? Write down your vision and goals for your future in Nollywood. Keep this as your reminder on the tough days!
Now that you’re ready, the world awaits you.
Becoming a Nollywood director is an exciting journey that combines creativity, technical knowledge, and the willingness to adapt to an ever-changing industry. By honing your craft, building your network, and starting small, you can lay the foundation for a successful career in one of the world’s most dynamic film industries. Nollywood is waiting for fresh voices and innovative storytellers, and who knows, the next big director in Nollywood could very well be you.

‘She’s dying’ – Zicsaloma accuses LUTH of medical negligence towards his cancer-stricken mother

Nigerian comedian and content creator, Zicsaloma, has publicly condemned the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) over gross mistreatment and neglect of his mother, who is currently battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.
In a distressed Instagram video, the skit maker, real name Aloma Isaac Junior, detailed a harrowing ordeal, claiming that hospital personnel at LUTH refused to admit his critically ill mother despite the urgency of her condition.
According to him, she had recently developed severe post-chemotherapy complications that prompted a desperate dash to the hospital. But rather than receiving emergency care, she was allegedly denied access at the gate and left unattended.
“She’s a skeleton of herself,” he said emotionally. He revealed that when they arrived at LUTH, she was not only turned away but also made to wait for hours outside the gate. “Do you know when we took my mum to LUTH, the hospital refused to let her in?” he said. “They now pointed us to a test centre beside LUTH, where we should go and do it. We now took the result back to the hospital. They refused to let my mum in.”
According to him, the hospital claimed only a doctor could authorise entry. But when one was finally called to assess the situation, he “literally walked out,” refusing to assist. “She cannot even stand. I literally backed my mum.”
Zicsaloma slammed what he described as a lack of compassion in Nigeria’s medical system. “Our medical team, the doctors of Nigeria, are terrible.” He added, “If you see my mum, she is a skeleton of herself.”
Frustrated and heartbroken, the skit maker painted a grim picture of the situation. “If somebody is ill in this country, the person can just die. You are seeing a lifeless woman. That cannot stand.”
He concluded his emotional outcry with a strong criticism of the healthcare system, saying, “These hospitals, they need to be checked.”

‘There is no forgiveness’: Seyi Law on why he can never support Peter Obi

Nigerian stand-up comedian, Oluwaseyitan Lawrence Aletile, popularly known as Seyi Law, has said he can never support Peter Obi, presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections.
The funnyman made the revelation in a recent interview on the Teju Babyface show, saying the former Anambra State Governor can never have his forgiveness.
Seyi Law pinpointed the actions of Peter Obi’s supporters, the Obidients, as the reason why he holds a grudge against him.
He claimed Obidients insulted his wife and children because he backed President Bola Tinubu while Peter Obi stood by and refused to call them to order while also failing to admit that his supporters attacked those who did not support him.
He argued that the former Anambra governor’s “failure” to condemn the actions of his supporters makes him “unfit” for his support.
Furthermore, Seyi Law likened the Obidient movement to a “cult” that doesn’t “support free thinking”.
He added that Obidients crossed personal boundaries by going after his family and it is one thing he finds “unforgivable”.
“The moment you cross that boundary from me to my children, mother, and wife, there is no forgiveness. That is why there is nothing on earth that Peter Obi can do that will make me support him,” Seyi Law declared.
“They attacked my children and my wife. As long as Peter Obi does not call them to order and he keeps denying that they are doing that, he will never get my support. Let Peter Obi wear the garment of Jesus Christ today, he will never get my support.

“Hate or love me, my personal way of life is between me and God. Any organisation that does not support free thinking is a cult. I do not feel down at all because when you talk too much, I swear to you.
“One of the good things that God has done for me is that my anger does not last long. Personal anger for me does not last long. The only place it lasts long is when you leave me and attack my children, mother, and wife.”
