US carries out first firing squad execution since 2010

A South Carolina man, Brad Sigmon, 67, was executed by firing squad on Friday, marking the first firing squad execution in the United States in 15 years. Sigmon, convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriends parents with a baseball bat in 2001, was put to death at Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, according to South Carolina prison spokeswoman Chrysti Shain. Shain said the fatal shots were fired at 6:05 pm (2305 GMT), and Sigmon was pronounced dead three minutes later by a physician. Journalists who witnessed the execution described the scene as Sigmon, dressed in a black jumpsuit, was strapped to a chair in the death chamber with a small red bullseye over his heart. In a final statement, read by his attorney Gerald Bo King, Sigmon expressed a message of love and urged Christians to help end the death penalty. A hood was placed over his head before the firing squadvolunteers from the South Carolina Department of Correctionsfired their rifles from about 15 feet away through a slit in the wall. The shots were all fired at once, said journalist Anna Dobbins of WYFF News 4. There was a splash of blood when the bullets entered his body. King described Sigmons execution as horrifying and violent, calling it a bloody spectacle. It is unfathomable that, in 2025, South Carolina would execute one of its citizens in this bloody spectacle, he said. Sigmon was given a choice between lethal injection, the electric chair, or the firing squad. His attorney said he chose the firing squad after being placed in an impossible position. If he chose lethal injection, he risked the prolonged death suffered by all three of the men South Carolina has executed since September, King said. He also noted that the electric chair would burn and cook him alive, calling both options monstrous. The last firing squad execution in the United States was in Utah in 2010, with previous cases in 1996 and 1977. Since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, lethal injection has been the primary method of execution. However, some states have turned to alternative methods due to concerns over lethal injection protocols. Alabama has recently carried out four executions using nitrogen gas, a method condemned by UN experts as cruel and inhumane. Currently, five statesSouth Carolina, Utah, Idaho, Mississippi, and Oklahomahave authorized firing squads as an alternative execution method. There have been six executions in the U.S. so far this year, following 25 in 2024. The death penalty is abolished in 23 U.S. states, while California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania have moratoriums in place. President Donald Trump, a strong proponent of capital punishment, has called for an expansion of its use, stating it should be applied for the vilest crimes. The post US carries out first firing squad execution since 2010 appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

The Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, says the best person to tell a childs real age is a mother and not a birth certificate.  Jimoh shared this opinion while speaking on Channels TV on Tuesday, April 22. He appeared on the TV station to address issues surrounding the 17-year-old viral sensation, Quadri Yusuf, who was arrested in January this year and was remanded in prison custody.  Following a public outcry, he was released last week from prison custody. In his interview with Channels TV this morning, the Police chief was questioned on why a minor was arrested, arraigned and remanded in prison custody. Responding, he saidThe record we have is that the boy stated that he is 18 and the best person to tell you the actual age of a person is the parent, not birth certificate that the lawyer is parading. It should be investigated because birth certificates are not issued inside phones. We all know how birth certificates are issued. Even if it is declaration of age, it is equally not issued inside a phone”Quadri became a viral sensation after he was captured on camera standing before Peter Obi’s convoy.  The post The best person to tell a childs age is a mother not birth certificate – Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, says appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

A massive protest erupted in Abuja on Tuesday as over 5,000 Nigerians, under the banner of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, took to the streets, demanding the prosecution of Mele Kyari, the former CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The protesters marched to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, calling for an immediate investigation into NNPCL’s operations during Kyari’s five-year tenure.

Led by activist Kabir Matazu, the group accused Kyari of presiding over a culture of opacity and financial mismanagement that contributed to the nation’s economic woes.

“It is on record that the sack of the erstwhile corrupt leadership of the NNPCL drew applause from Nigerians.

“But Nigerians are disenchanted that Mr. President has only stopped at removing the former leadership without taking steps to investigate how Kyari and his cabal bled this country dry,” said Matazu

The protesters zeroed in on the controversial rehabilitation of government-owned refineries, pointing to billions of dollars allegedly spent without transparency.

Nigerians Demand Answers on $2B Deal With Matrix Energy

They also raised questions about a murky debt arrangement with Matrix Energy Limited, which is reportedly owed over $2 billion by NNPCL.

“What we are talking about here is a daily allocation of 80,000 barrels of crude oil to a non-state actor.

“This deal was signed during Kyari’s administration, and it is being used to service a debt that Nigerians know nothing about,” Matazu stated

The group demanded that the Attorney General initiate a judicial review and push for a commission of inquiry into NNPCL’s refinery contracts and financial dealings under Kyari.

They stressed that an investigation is necessary not just for the recovery of funds, but to ensure current and future officials are held accountable.

“If Nigeria must move forward, we must understand what went wrong, who is responsible, and how to prevent it from happening again,” Matazu said.

The protesters vowed to sustain their movement until the government takes decisive action.
