This is counterproductive – CAN knocks northern states over Ramadan school closure

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has described the decision by some northern state governments to close all schools throughout the Ramadan fasting period as counterproductive.

This is contained in a statement signed by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh on Sunday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some states in the north, like Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi, have directed that all schools should be closed during Ramadan.

According to CAN, such decisions raise serious issues of equity, educational continuity, and the welfare of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.

CAN said the closures would disrupt education in a region already grappling with high rates of out-of-school children, averaging 44 percent, and undermine equity in governance.

“The closure of schools across these northern states, ranging from nursery to tertiary levels, for an extended period will disrupt academic schedules and threaten the educational advancement of millions of students.

“These states are already facing alarming rates of out-of-school children, averaging 44 percent according to recent data, far exceeding the national average.

“Such prolonged breaks risk deepening this crisis, undermining efforts to ensure access to quality education for all,” CAN said.

CAN also said that while it respected religious practices, it was dismayed by the lack of broad consultation with stakeholders before making the decisions.

The association further gave global examples, such as what it said obtained in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where schools remained open with adjusted schedules during Ramadan.

It called for dialogue involving religious leaders, educators, and parents to reassess the policy.

CAN warned that if inclusive solutions were not reached, it may pursue legal action to protect the students’ constitutional rights to education and freedom of conscience.

Therefore, it called for calm and peaceful engagement in the development, adding that fairness and national cohesion were critical.

In a rare display of fiscal accountability, Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Sankara, has refunded the state government ₦301 million in unspent funds from the 2025 Ramadan feeding initiative.

The development was announced during the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Umar Namadi.

The council commended Sankara for what it described as a “notable display of accountability.”

The Ramadan feeding initiative, which aimed to alleviate hunger during the holy month, was allocated ₦4.8 billion and operated across all 27 Local Government Areas of the state.

It featured 700 feeding centres and served meals to over 5,550 residents daily during the 29-day fasting period.

Each centre catered to more than 300 individuals, with support extended to local farmers and business owners to sustain the programme’s food supply chain.

“The commissioner’s action is a commendable demonstration of integrity and transparency in public service.

“This kind of conduct reinforces the public’s trust in government and sets a benchmark for future public office holders,” the executive council stated

The decision to return the unspent funds comes as Nigerians increasingly demand higher standards of accountability from public officials.

Observers say the move could signal a shift in how state-level projects are managed and evaluated.

Sankara has not issued a personal statement on the refund, but was praised broadly across government circles for his stewardship.

The state government has yet to disclose how the refunded ₦301 million will be reallocated, but sources suggest it may go toward social welfare or infrastructure projects.

The Ramadan initiative also strengthened local economies by involving community members in food procurement and distribution—an approach observers say added both economic and social value.
