He began his senior career at his hometown club, Belenenses, where he became a regular starter and helped them achieve a respectable league position of eighth in the 2007-08 season.
His performances attracted the attention of Benfica, which he joined in April 2008, signing a four-year contract.
At Benfica, Amorim experienced a mixed bag. He contributed to league and cup triumphs but faced fierce competition for his position and suffered significant knee injuries that hampered his playing time.

Ruben Amorim’s early coaching career saw him take the reins at Casa Pia in the Portuguese third division in 2018-19.
Despite initial struggles, he found success by implementing a back-three system, a tactic that would become his trademark.
He then moved to Braga in September 2019, initially managing their reserve team before promotion to the first team after Ricardo Sa Pinto was given the heave-ho.
In a short but impactful spell, Amorim led Braga to victory in the Taca da Liga, their first trophy in four years.

He also masterminded a historic away win against Benfica in February 2020, ending a 65-year drought.
Amorim’s impressive 10 wins in 13 games solidified his reputation as a rising star in management, leading to his Sporting switch in March 2020 after Silas’ dismissal.
Amorim ended Sporting’s 19-year title drought in his debut season (2020-21), with his side’s 32-match undefeated run a particular highlight. The Lions also notched the cup, thus completing the domestic double.

Although they could not retain the league crown the following year (2021-22), the young manager won the Portuguese Super Cup, guided the club to the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in 13 years (not since 2008-09) and secured another Taca de Liga title.
His third full season in 2022-23 at the Lisbon giants saw them finish fourth and lose the domestic cup final to Porto (2-0).
Amorim and Sporting responded to that below-par season with a stunning 2023-24 performance to reclaim the Primeira Liga title, the club’s 20th.
Although they narrowly lost the domestic cup decider against Porto, Amorim’s status as a talented young manager was already established.
Sporting Lisbon provided a major update on Manchester United’s bid to replace Erik Ten Hag.
The 2024-25 league season began with Sporting reeling off nine consecutive wins as of November 1, 2024, convincing Manchester United to agree to a deal with the Portuguese club to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.

Can Ruben Amorim speak English?
Yes, Ruben Amorim can speak English and has shown his comendable grasp of the language in previous press conferences.
There was a feeling that Ten Hag never communicated with assuredness in the language but Manchester United supporters may not have to worry about that with their new boss.
Ruben Amorim Tactics
According to the Coaches’ Voice via the Premier League, Ruben Amorim’s success at Sporting Lisbon stemmed from his proactive, adaptable tactics that emphasised possession, attacking through the inside channels and pressing.
Amorim employed a back-three system — typically a 3-4-2-1 — designed to break lines and build possession from the back.
The central centre-back often pushed higher, creating numerical overloads in midfield and opening passing lanes to bypass the opposition press.
Amorim’s wing-backs provided width, allowing the attackers to overload one channel and create opportunities for combinations or switches of play.
The departing Sporting head coach favoured a fluid front three who rotated and operated primarily in the inside channels.
Without the ball, Amorim’s Sporting utilised an intense pressing system, with the front three prioritising central areas and forcing play wide.
The double-pivot typically covered central lanes and pressed aggressively, while the nearest wing-back to the ball pushed high to support the press and the far-side wing-back tucked in to provide defensive cover.
When unable to press without the ball, Amorim’s Sporting dropped into a 5-2-3 or 5-4-1 mid-block, funnelling play wide.
Wing-backs aggressively pressed wide players, supported by the shifting double pivot and a compact backline, while the front three continued to press, with the far-side attacker adapting their position based on the opponent’s tendencies.
