Regent Secondary School, Abuja In The Throes Of Reputational Conflict

Since the commercialization of education in Nigeria through private ownership, the country has unarguably joined the league of outstanding countries where the search for quality education has often led to the enrollment of children and wards in multi-million naira/dollar fee paying schools, which are perceived to be the best whether at primary, secondary or tertiary levels by parents/guardians who can afford the means. In the last two decades, there has been an upsurge in the number of such elite schools where children of the affluent dominate. Such schools, particularly primary and secondary, are located in choice areas in cities like Lagos, Abuja, and other state capitals that are populated by the relatively rich or other cities or towns that provide good natural ambience that exhibit some high serenity needed for learning. The rapid increase in the number of such high fee paying schools perceived to be in a position to offer quality education was largely prompted by the quick decline in the quality of education in public schools as a result of poor governance of the country by those in the corridors of power and the liberalization of the educational sector which allows for private ownership of schools at different levels whether primary, secondary or tertiary. In light of such a development, in 2007, The Regent School, a British-style co-education school, was established to cater to children of British expatriates working in the city. It is located in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. Children of Nigerian parents and other expatriates who need the British style of education curriculum are allowed to enroll at The Regent School. Over time, Children from The Regent Primary School can transfer to The Regent Secondary School for their secondary education from age 11+. The Regent Secondary School follows the English National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 and prepares students for IGCSE examinations. The Regent Secondary School is one of Abujas most sought-after schools. The Regent School is the first British School Overseas (BSO) in Nigeria. This is why many parents with the financial wherewithal and admiration for the British style of education would prefer their children to enroll at The Regent. With the degree of public acceptability and level of success by The Regent Secondary School, Abuja, among other institutions designated as British School Overseas (BSO), one would rather find it unimaginable and unbelievable to hear that the management of the school could resort to an action that is both unjust and indefensible given the degree of information already filtering into the public space about the expulsion of six students of the college, in the month of February, 2025 at a time they have barely three months to commence their Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Examination. While it is not within the rights of anyone outside the school system to dictate how the school is managed within the context of its extant rules, it is still the responsibility of any well meaning citizen to question decisions that are not mindful of the rights of persons particularly where a perceived injustice or persecution is alleged. To this extent, one is beginning to feel worried that if the case of the expelled students is not promptly and properly addressed, the ripple effect may pitch management of elite Regent Secondary School against some members of the Nigerian public and possibly the international community who may judge the action taken so far as unjustifiable and image-damaging. Some available information largely reveals some high-handedness of management of The Regent Secondary School, against the expelled students, who are reportedly described as the fall guys in a situation where the actual culprits of examination malpractice and cheating were given only a few days suspension. The students were reportedly linked to cheating during examination in the school earlier in the year, but from some very credible sources in the school, there was no evidence to prove that the expelled students actually cheated in the examination, and despite the repeated insistence on their innocence, the school management chose to expell them from the college, thereby making it difficult for them to continue their education and preparation for the IGCSE examination beginning in May, 2025. The situation becomes more disheartening given the emerging revelation that some teachers in the college were promoting a culture of cheating in the college examinations. Some of the teachers whose names are with-held were the actual culprits in the cheating saga. Rather than discipline the teachers who are corrupting the students who are minors, the Regent Secondary School management resorted to punishing the innocent as a volte face in the attempt to cover up and portray the school as being a champion of integrity with respect to examinations. This development does not speak well of the management of The Regent Secondary School if truly the six students were expelled unjustly. Since they have less than two months to commence their IGCSE examination along with other students in the same class, their matter calls for urgent and serious intervention from higher authorities. In this case, the British Council in Nigeria, which plays some oversight functions, should quickly intervene by investigating the circumstances that led to the expulsion of the students. Some possible remedies should be worked out in order to prevent some ugly stories that could obviously cause some reputational damage to the college, which many people have associated with for some time now. It has become expedient for the British Council to promptly intervene in this matter as any delay that might ultimately lead to the failure of the expelled students not sitting for the May, 2025 examination may lead to some distasteful revelations that are capable of putting the school in an un-contemplated bad light. The interest of the kids must be prioritized above any image-saving measures by The Regent Secondary School. Prince Andrew’s s3x accuser, Virginia Giuffre says she mistakenly posted claim that she has four days left to live after car crash

Prince Andrew’s s3x accuser, Virginia Guiffre has said she mistakenly posted the claim that she had just four days left to live to her public Instagram. Ms Giuffre, 41, sparked concerns online when she shared a photo of her ‘battered and bruised’ claiming she was dying after being hit by a school bus. Ms. Giuffre said a speeding vehicle had ploughed into her car and that doctors had told her she had four days to live. Today she issued a statement to clarify the circumstances of a ‘car crash’ that caused her injuries and ‘kidney failure’. The statement said: ‘Virginia thanks everyone for the outpouring of love and support. She is overwhelmed with gratitude. ‘Today she remains in serious condition while receiving medical care. On March 24, in rural Western Australia, a school bus hit the car in which she was riding. ‘The police were called but said that there was no one available to come to the scene. ‘They asked if anyone was injured and suggested that if they were, they should make their way to the hospital. ‘The school bus driver had a bus full of distraught children and left the scene to get them back, saying he would file a police report, which he did later. ‘Virginia was banged up and bruised and returned home. Virginia’s condition worsened and she was admitted to the hospital. ‘Concerning her Instagram post, Virginia thought that she had posted on her private Facebook page. ‘Virginia and her family thank everyone for their concern.’ She is currently being treated at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital in Perth, Australia. In January, the last batch of Epstein court papers to be released showed Ms Giuffre, 41, claimed she was paid $15,000 (12,000) to have s3x with Prince Andrew. As part of a civil lawsuit against Epsteins former lover Ghislaine Maxwell, she told a judge of her alleged abuse by the Duke of York in 2016. Asked under oath in 2016 over whether she was paid “by or on behalf of Jeffrey Epstein” for the encounter, which Andrew denies took place, she said: “Yes, I did receive $15,000. “I dont know what equivalent that is to pounds. I received it in American dollars.” Prince Andrew reached an out-of-court settlement with Ms Giuffre, ne Roberts, to avoid going to trial in 2022. He had faced a public hearing over allegations he s3xually abused the American woman three times when she was just 17, and while she was the victim of a trafficking ring orchestrated by billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. The Duke has always strenuously denied the accusations. The post Prince Andrew’s s3x accuser, Virginia Giuffre says she mistakenly posted claim that she has four days left to live after car crash appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

PHOTOS: Edo tribunal verdict ‘leaked’ ahead of judgment day

A day before the official ruling, a purported judgment from the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has surfaced online, revealing a divided decision on the petition challenging Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory.
The tribunal, chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, is expected to announce its verdict on Wednesday, April 2.
However, leaked documents suggest a two-to-one ruling dismissing the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
According to the leaked decision, Justice Kpochi and Justice A.B. Yusuf ruled in favor of Okpebholo, while Justice A.A. Adewole dissented, arguing that the election results should have been reversed.
Justice Adewole’s minority judgment contended that the election did not comply substantially with the Electoral Act and that Ighodalo had proven his case.
“The petitioners’ case was not rebutted, and they showed unit by unit how the actual total should be 243,113 votes, while the 2nd Respondent’s tally should stand at 210,326 votes—a clear reversal of the declared result,” he stated.

In contrast, the majority ruling acknowledged irregularities, including over-voting and missing serial numbers in EC 25B forms, but maintained that these did not significantly affect the overall outcome.
“The petitioners have not discharged the dual burden to the satisfaction of the law. Accordingly, the petition lacks merit and is hereby dismissed,” the judgment read.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had previously declared Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, the winner with 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who polled 247,655 votes.
Unconvinced, the PDP took the matter to the tribunal, citing widespread irregularities.
The leaked documents have stirred political tension, with many awaiting the tribunal’s official verdict to confirm whether the leaked judgment aligns with the final decision.

Trump administration delays plan to ban people from 43 countries from travelling to the US

The Trump administration’s plan to ban people from 43 countries from travelling to the US is delayed indefinitely. Trump issued an executive order on January 20 requiring intensified security vetting of any foreigners seeking admission to the US to detect national security threats. Back in March, the White House put out a memo that showed countries divided into three separate groups – including full visa suspensions and partial suspensions. Many are from the Middle East and Africa, with Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran and North Korea among the 11 who face the most drastic measures. In the second group, 10 countries would face partial suspensions that would impact tourist and student visas as well as other immigrant visas, with some exceptions. And in a third group, a total of 22 countries would be considered for a partial suspension of US visa issuance if their governments ‘do not make efforts to address deficiencies within 60 days’, the memo said. Trump’s ban has now been delayed because the State Department continues to miss deadlines to submit a report detailing recommendations for restrictions. They were originally due on March 21 but department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Monday that it’s still being worked on. ‘I can tell you that were working on what the executive order asked for, which is not travel bans of course but the nature of restrictions from other countries if whether or not they meet the standard of security and vetting thats required for entry into the United States,’ she said. A new deadline for the report to reach Trump’s desk does not currently exist but Bruce confirmed it is still in the works. ‘Again, because theres not a date, it doesnt mean that its not being worked on. So we are all working to implement what President Trump has ordered,’ she said. The post Trump administration delays plan toban people from 43 countries from travelling to the US appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
