Presidency tenders fact to – Tinubu has been accused…

Tinubu has been accused of favouring his kinsmen in the appointment of heads of security agencies in the country.

The Presidency has publicly released hard facts to counter the allegation that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is biased towards the South-West regarding appointments in the security sector.

Last week, the President named Major General Olufemi Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), to hold forth for the substantive COAS, General Tahoreed Lagbaja, who has been away from the country treating an undisclosed ailment.

Just like Lagbaja and Tinubu, Oluyede hails from the South-West and while the first two are from Osun and Lagos States, respectively, the latter is an indigene of Ekiti State.

This tribal affinity has led to insinuations in some quarters that the President has perfected the Yorubanisation (a term which loosely interprets as favouring the Yoruba) of the security sector at the expense of other regions.

The accusers argued that Tinubu could have opted for an equally competent general to deputise for Lagbaja instead of another person from the South-West

Presidency debunks ‘Yorubanisation’ claim

Reacting to the criticisms, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Public Communications and Orientation, published a list of the heads of security agencies appointed by the current administration.

The post, shared on his X account on Saturday, November 2, 2024, showed that the North West has the highest number of appointees (eight), followed by the South West (five) and North Central (four).

According to the presidential aide’s list, North East has three appointees, while South-South and South-East have one apiece.

“Facts do not lie. Below we see laid bare the facts about the regional outlook of President Tinubu’s appointments within 20 security agencies. The label of him favouring Yorubas in the Security set-up does not fit. Nigeria we hail thee!,” Dare captioned the post.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, drawing an emotional close to a chapter in Nigeria’s political history.

The late President’s body arrived in Nigeria from the United Kingdom earlier in the day and was received with full state honours at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina.

President Bola Tinubu, who flew in from Abuja, arrived at 1:42 p.m. and was on hand to personally receive the remains of his predecessor.

A guard of honour was mounted for the Commander-in-Chief, shortly before the Nigerian Air Force plane transporting Buhari’s body touched down at 1:51 p.m.

According to family sources, the body was first taken to Buhari’s Daura residence, where his immediate family and close relatives offered a private farewell.

A few solemn moments were observed before the casket was moved to the community’s central prayer ground for the final rites.

“It was a dignified and peaceful farewell,” a family member told reporters. “We are grateful he returned home and was buried according to his wishes.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, died in a London hospital on Sunday, 13 July 2025, after a prolonged illness.

His passing triggered tributes from global leaders and Nigerians across political divides.

In a brief remark at the airport, President Tinubu described his predecessor as “a patriot who loved Nigeria till his last breath.”

Security was tight in and around Daura, as thousands gathered quietly to witness the late leader’s final journey.

Traditional rulers, senior government officials, and members of the armed forces were present to pay their respects.

The former military ruler and two-term civilian President is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
