PHOTOS: 5,000 protesters storm Abuja, demand probe of ex-NNPCL boss Mele Kyari

A massive protest erupted in Abuja on Tuesday as over 5,000 Nigerians, under the banner of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, took to the streets, demanding the prosecution of Mele Kyari, the former CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The protesters marched to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, calling for an immediate investigation into NNPCL’s operations during Kyari’s five-year tenure.
Led by activist Kabir Matazu, the group accused Kyari of presiding over a culture of opacity and financial mismanagement that contributed to the nation’s economic woes.
“It is on record that the sack of the erstwhile corrupt leadership of the NNPCL drew applause from Nigerians.
“But Nigerians are disenchanted that Mr. President has only stopped at removing the former leadership without taking steps to investigate how Kyari and his cabal bled this country dry,” said Matazu
The protesters zeroed in on the controversial rehabilitation of government-owned refineries, pointing to billions of dollars allegedly spent without transparency.
Nigerians Demand Answers on $2B Deal With Matrix Energy
They also raised questions about a murky debt arrangement with Matrix Energy Limited, which is reportedly owed over $2 billion by NNPCL.
“What we are talking about here is a daily allocation of 80,000 barrels of crude oil to a non-state actor.
“This deal was signed during Kyari’s administration, and it is being used to service a debt that Nigerians know nothing about,” Matazu stated
The group demanded that the Attorney General initiate a judicial review and push for a commission of inquiry into NNPCL’s refinery contracts and financial dealings under Kyari.

They stressed that an investigation is necessary not just for the recovery of funds, but to ensure current and future officials are held accountable.
“If Nigeria must move forward, we must understand what went wrong, who is responsible, and how to prevent it from happening again,” Matazu said.
The protesters vowed to sustain their movement until the government takes decisive action.

I paid N16 million for Mohbadâs second autopsy â Singerâs father claims

The father of late singer Mohbad, Joseph Aloba, says he paid a pathologist 16 million for his sons second autopsy. Speaking during a TikTok live session, Aloba insisted, With all sincerity, I paid the first tranche of 16 million to the pathologist. After that, I spent close to 2 million. So, if the pathologist can come out to deny my claim, then dont believe me again. Some people were saying it was 12 million that I paid, but Im still telling you now that I paid 16 million. This revelation comes a month after an independent autopsy and forensic medical review by Dr. Uwom Eze failed to determine Mohbads cause of death. In June 2024, a Coroners Court magistrate in Ikorodu, Lagos State, granted permission to hire a licensed pathologist for this follow-up examination. Vatican sets May 18 for Inauguration of Pope Leo XIV

The inauguration mass of the newly elected head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, will take place on Sunday, May 18, in St. Peters Square, the Vatican announced. World leaders are expected to gather for the event, to be held 10 days after the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the first American head of the worlds 1.4 billion Catholics. The Vatican said the new pontiff would meet with journalists on Monday and diplomats accredited to the Holy See the following Friday. Pope Leos first general audience will be on Wednesday, May 21, and he will meet with members of the Roman Curia, top Vatican officials, on May 24. DID YOU KNOW? New Pope Leo XIV visited Nigeria in 2016

As Catholics worldwide welcome Pope Leo XIV, a lesser-known detail about the new pontiff has emerged: his visit to Nigeria nearly a decade ago.
Then known as Bishop Robert Prevost, the American-born clergyman travelled to Abuja in 2016 as part of his work with the Order of St. Augustine.
The visit marked a historic milestone for the religious order.
“For the first time, General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine on the African continent — Abuja, Nigeria,” read a translated caption from a 2016 photo posted on Pope Leo’s X (formerly Twitter) account.

The image shows him alongside Catholic leaders, both foreign and Nigerian, dressed in traditional clerical attire.
At the time of his visit, Leo XIV was serving as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru.
Before that, he led the Augustinian Province in Chicago and served two terms as Prior General of the global order, known for its emphasis on community life, spiritual reflection, and service.
His connection to Nigeria stands out, especially considering the country’s deep Catholic roots and the long gap since a papal visit.
The last pope to visit Nigeria was John Paul II in 1998.

President Bola Tinubu congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election, saying the pontiff’s “message of faith and hope resonates across the globe.”
He also expressed joy on behalf of Nigerian Catholics, who now find a deeper link to the Vatican through the pope’s past presence in Abuja.
Pope Leo succeeds Pope Francis, who visited several African nations but never Nigeria during his papacy.
