A member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Olawunmi Fayemi-Obayelu, has urged women in the state to engage in politics by vying for political offices in the forthcoming local government elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has scheduled the elections in all 18 local government areas in the state for January 18, 2025.

Fayemi-Obayelu, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, also called on all ward leaders and party chieftains to support women for positions in the forthcoming polls.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday in Okitipupa, the lawmaker, representing Ilaje Constituency II, emphasised the importance of women in the political and social development of any society, saying that they should be fully involved in the exercise.

According to her, women have clear visions when it comes to social issues and the development of local communities, as they understand the workings of the government and their impacts on the people at the grassroots.

“It is also important to note that the rate of women involvement in politics at the local, state and national levels is seriously declining and that is why we have been advocating for more women coming into politics.

“So our leaders need to encourage women to participate in politics by supporting them, campaigning for them and making sure they emerge as winners in the forthcoming local government polls.

“We all know that Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa is a gender equaliser and a great advocate for women’s inclusion in the political process and system.

“He is a man who strongly believes that women advancement in politics is an open opportunity for the development, advancement and growth of the state,” she said.

Fayemi-Obayelu also stressed the need for allowing women to hold sensitive positions, regardless of their complexity, citing the success of women who are currently holding political positions in the state and council areas.

According to her, the women have demonstrated their capabilities by representing their constituents effectively, thus necessitating the need for bringing more of them on board.

2027: Is Tinubu-Shettima at war? APC vice chairman explains

Mustapha Salihu, the National Vice Chairman (North-East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed reports suggesting a fallout between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing the speculation as the handiwork of “conflict entrepreneurs.”

In recent weeks, growing speculation has pointed to a possible rift between Nigeria’s two top leaders, with claims that Vice President Shettima has been sidelined in key decision-making processes and political endorsements ahead of the 2027 election.

One of the main concerns raised by observers is President Tinubu’s alleged failure to formally transfer power to Shettima during his prolonged travels abroad—a move that has traditionally signaled trust and collaboration between both offices.

Further fuelling the speculation is Shettima’s conspicuous absence or low mention during high-profile events where Tinubu has received endorsements for a second term in office.

This has sparked suggestions that the President may be considering a new running mate for the next electoral cycle.

No rift between Tinubu and Shettima

However, during an appearance on Channels Television on Monday night, June 16, Salihu refuted the claims, emphasising that internal party affairs are not conducted in the public domain.

“The administration of a party is not run on social media, newspapers, or television. It’s handled internally,” Salihu said, adding, “These kinds of rumours are inevitable in every administration—people will always try to suggest friction between the principal and the vice.”

He attributed the rumours to political opportunists looking to exploit divisions.

“It’s what some insecure politicians thrive on. But if you’re secure in yourself, you shouldn’t be bothered by such noise,” he added.

Salihu also dismissed the idea that there was unrest within the APC in the North-East, the region from which Shettima hails.

“I’m in Yola. I’ve engaged with members from Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, and Yobe. We all stayed up the night before the summit brainstorming,” he said.

He concluded by insisting that the party remains united and any internal concerns are being handled discreetly.

A socio-political movement supporting President Bola Tinubu has declared its intent to mobilise 10 million votes for his re-election in 2027 through a nationwide grassroots campaign.

Speaking during a Democracy Day press briefing in Abuja, Sunday Adekanbi, protem national coordinator of the PBAT Door-2-Door Movement, announced the group’s mission to “sustain the momentum of progress” under the Tinubu administration.

“In just two years, President Tinubu has demonstrated unparalleled vision, courage, and resolve, positioning Nigeria as a global economic powerhouse and a beacon of democratic governance,” Adekanbi said.

The movement, which counts former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, as its grand patron, aims to garner support for Tinubu from the grassroots level.

According to Adekanbi, Tompolo will spearhead a nationwide tour that will engage citizens “ward by ward, street by street, and home by home.”

“His leadership will galvanise support across regions, uniting Nigerians behind a leader who has proven his capacity to deliver,” he added.

The campaign will focus on promoting President Tinubu’s reform agenda, countering misinformation, and highlighting the administration’s achievements under the Renewed Hope programme.

Adekanbi described the initiative as deeply rooted in community-level activism and pledged the movement would serve as a “robust support network” for Tinubu’s 2027 campaign.

“We vow to mobilise 10 million votes for his re-election in 2027, ensuring that his transformative vision resonates with every Nigerian.

“We call on all Nigerians to join us in this movement to secure a brighter future under President Tinubu’s leadership,” he said.

The PBAT Door-2-Door Movement joins other early support blocs rallying ahead of the 2027 general elections, signalling growing political mobilisation as the president approaches the halfway point of his first term.

'I am wiser now' — Bello El-Rufai apologises to Goodluck Jonathan for past criticism

Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North, has publicly apologised to former President Goodluck Jonathan for his previous harsh criticism of the ex-leader.

The lawmaker, who is the son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, said his past stance was driven by ignorance and youthful exuberance.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Bello expressed regret over his earlier views and acknowledged that Nigeria experienced good governance under Jonathan’s administration.

“When I was naive or when I thought ego or gratification mattered, I used to be very active in criticising President Jonathan.

“I even forgot in my naivety, as many young people do, that we had governance then,” he said.

The legislator revealed that he had asked his father to convey his apology to the former president during a consultation visit.

“He said he was going to see President Jonathan, and I paused. I said, ‘Please when you see him, tell him I am very sorry, I am wiser now.’”

Bello’s remarks come years after his vocal opposition to Jonathan ahead of the 2015 general election, which brought Muhammadu Buhari to power.

His apology signals a shift in tone among some members of the political class who were once fiercely critical of the former president’s leadership.

He went further to praise Jonathan’s democratic maturity, saying, “It takes a lot, particularly in Africa, to lose an election and leave. He did that.”

The apology has sparked online conversations, with many Nigerians commending the lawmaker for demonstrating humility and introspection.

As public discourse around governance deepens, Bello El-Rufai’s comments underscore a growing recognition of the need for political maturity and historical reflection in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
