The United States Embassy in Nigeria has unveiled updates to its immigrant visa application process, set to take effect on January 1, 2025.

Applicants will now be required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos twice as part of the streamlined procedure aimed at reducing delays caused by incomplete documentation.

In a statement posted on its official X page, the embassy noted, “For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, applicants are required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice during the immigrant visa process.”

The first visit termed the “In-Person Document Review,” will involve applicants meeting with a consular staff member to ensure that all required documents are in order.

The embassy elaborated on its website, “This review allows applicants to retrieve any missing documents ahead of their visa interviews, helping to avoid delays in application processing.”

The second visit will be the visa interview itself, conducted by a Consular Officer. This crucial appointment will be scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC).

The embassy warned that applicants who fail to complete the document review phase will be required to reschedule their visa interviews.

“This new process is designed to help you prepare for your visa interview and to prevent significant delays in processing your immigrant visa,” the embassy stated.

The update follows the embassy’s recent transition to a new visa services provider for its consulates in Abuja and Lagos on August 26, 2024, signalling ongoing efforts to improve the visa application experience for Nigerians.

Family demands justice as – The family of Jacob…

The family of Jacob Emmanuel, a 22-year-old resident of Mpape, Abuja, is demanding justice following his death in police custody.

Emmanuel, detained for eight months without trial, reportedly endured severe torture under officers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Kado.

Emmanuel’s ordeal began in February 2024 when he was arrested at home over a stolen television.

Despite recovering the item and concluding investigations, police officers allegedly refused to release him or file charges. Instead, they demanded a ₦200,000 bribe, according to the family’s lawyer.

“He was subjected to inhumane treatment,” a family member revealed, adding that Emmanuel was tortured at the Guzape detention facility, notoriously called “Abattoir.” His health deteriorated, and in October 2024, he succumbed to his injuries.

Emmanuel’s widow mother reportedly made relentless efforts to secure his release, including filing petitions to the FCT Commissioner of Police, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police, but no action was taken.

The family’s lawyer has now called for an investigation, specifically naming Inspector Paul Shafi and other officers for their alleged role in Emmanuel’s death.

Inspector Shafi boasted about the number of young people who had died in detention under his watch,” a family source alleged.

Emmanuel’s body has been moved to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital as the family continues to seek justice, demanding accountability for the negligence and torture that led to his tragic death.
