Lagos govt attends to 300 sexual, domestic violence cases monthly

Lagos govt attends to 300 sexual, domestic violence cases monthly, The Executive Secretary of DSVA, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, gave the figure during a symposium tagged: ”Are We Doing Enough? A Consideration of Lagos States Response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Last Decade”.
The event was held on Wednesday in Lagos.
Vivour-Adeniyi said that the figure was a testament to increased faith in the government’s system.
She noted that the state’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team was established in September 2014, and it metamorphosed into a full-fledged statutory agency in 2021.
According to her, in the past 10 years, there has been the gradual breaking of the culture of silence on sexual and gender-based violence in Lagos State by an increase in formal and informal reporting of cases.
“As of last year, we provided services to over 6,333 survivors. We now attend to an average of 300 new cases monthly.
“People are more confident in the system. People are becoming more aware of support services that exist which they can take advantage of.
“We also have people serving as mandated reporters, good samaritans, whistleblowers, people seeing something and saying something and ensuring that something is done.
“Lagos State Government has declared zero tolerance for all forms of sexual and gender-based violence,” she said.
The executive secretary said that sexual domestic violence violated the fundamental rights of individuals and had far-reaching consequences on their physical, emotional and psychological well-being.
She said that the acts of violence often occurred behind closed doors, making it difficult for victims to seek help or justice.
“Lagos State, as a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, faces unique challenges in addressing domestic and sexual violence. Our growing population and rapid urbanisation have created pressures that can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities.
“This symposium provides a valuable platform for us to discuss the root causes of domestic and sexual violence, explore effective prevention strategies, and enhance our response mechanisms.
“By sharing knowledge, experiences and best practices, we can strengthen our collective efforts to combat these crimes.
“The fight against sexual and gender-based violence is truly a collective responsibility, and I am confident that by working together, we can create a safer Lagos for all,” she said.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Department Services), University of Lagos, said that, in the last 10 years, the agency had evolved and delivered on its mandate to protect the vulnerable, particularly women and children being abused.
Atsenuwa said that the state government’s interventions had raised the bar of understanding of the problems and proffered solutions.
She, however, called for the sustainability of the system, by expanding its capacity.
Panelists at the symposium commended the strides of the government in the last 10 years to reduce cases of domestic and sexual violence.
They called for an increase in funding and logistics for relevant agencies to carry out proper investigations on cases of sexual and domestic violence.
The panellists also sought localisation of DSVA activities in local communities, as well as more public awareness of the issue.
They called for a community accountability model.

DSS, NIA launch investigation into Natasha’s attendance at IPU meeting

The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the attendance of suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the recent Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York, an event she claims has now put her at risk of arrest upon her return to Nigeria.
According to Premium Times, government sources revealed that Akpoti-Uduaghan attended the event without undergoing the required nomination process.
The Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are reportedly leading the probe to determine how she gained access to the meeting and whether any individuals or organizations facilitated her participation.
Calls for an investigation intensified after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s speech at the IPU on March 11, where she alleged that she was being persecuted in Nigeria for rejecting sexual advances from Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

She also acknowledged that, following her suspension, her participation in the meeting was unauthorized.
Speaking with Premium Times on Sunday, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed she had received indications that she might be arrested upon her return to Abuja.
“… I’m aware there are plans underway to have me arrested as soon as I arrive Abuja,” she said.
She further alleged that Nigerian officials attempted to remove her from the United Nations premises following her speech.
“The Senate President Akpabio sent three staff headed by the Chargé D’Affaires of the Nigerian embassy in New York to evacuate me from the United Nations premises right after my speech. I was rescued by parliamentarians from other countries and the security.”
Government sources stated that the investigation would focus on verifying whether she obtained the necessary credentials, whether external parties assisted her, and whether her statements misrepresented Nigeria’s interests.
Addressing how she was able to attend the IPU meeting despite not being an official delegate, Akpoti-Uduaghan explained:

“I registered online as a senator. The suspension does not remove my legitimacy as a senator. I registered online and got a pass.”
“I attended the same programme last year and was already on the mailing list. After I got a pass, I bought my own ticket and funded my trip and participation at the event.”

Police rescue four kidnap victims, kill notorious kingpin, six others in Abia, Nasarawa

Police operatives in Abia and Nasarawa states have rescued four kidnapped victims and neutralised seven criminals, including a notorious kidnapping kingpin known as ‘Honor’, during separate operations.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer on Sunday, the operations also led to the recovery of several arms and ammunition, while some suspects escaped with gunshot wounds.
In Abia State, police received reports on 9 March 2025 that four individuals had been kidnapped while driving their Toyota RAV4 along New Umuahia Road, Obingwa. Acting on intelligence, the command’s tactical team stormed a three-bedroom bungalow in Osokwa, Osisioma LGA, on 14 March, where the victims were being held.
A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the neutralisation of six kidnappers. The victims were rescued unharmed, and security operatives recovered two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 34 rounds of live ammunition. The rescued individuals were later taken to the police hospital for medical attention.
In a separate operation in Nasarawa State, a joint team of police officers, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes tracked down the wanted kidnapper ‘Honor’ in Akwanga. He was intercepted near Akwanga Central Mosque while attempting to flee on a motorcycle.
The suspect resisted arrest, brandishing a firearm, but was swiftly neutralised. Security operatives recovered a Beretta pistol and 12 rounds of 9mm live ammunition. One accomplice managed to escape with gunshot wounds, and a manhunt is underway to capture the fleeing suspect.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun commended the operatives for their professionalism and reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to eradicating kidnapping and violent crimes.
“These recent operations underscore the resilience of the Nigeria Police Force in combating criminality. We remain dedicated to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety of all citizens,” the IGP stated.
