The Police Command in Nasarawa State says it has neutralised a notorious kidnapper in Akwanga Local Government Area.

SP Ramhan Nansel, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), disclosed this in a statement to journalists on Saturday in Lafia.

He said the feat was achieved through a joint patrol team of its personnel, the Army and local vigilantes, who neutralised the leader of a kidnapping and robbery gang operating in the area.

“This achievement occurred on Friday, March 14, at about 10:00 pm when security operatives tracked down the suspect, known as Honor.

“He is a well-known armed robber and kidnapper who had been on the command’s wanted list for multiple offences.

“He was intercepted near the Akwanga Central Mosque while riding a motorcycle and was fatally shot while attempting to evade arrest,” Nansel said.

According to the police spokesman, items recovered during a search operation included one Beretta pistol without a bridge number and 12 rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

The PPRO added that one of his accomplices managed to escape with gunshot wounds, while a search is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

He said that the deceased had been evacuated to the Akwanga General Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Nansel said that Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, Commissioner of Police, commended the operatives for their professional conduct and effective collaboration.

He urged them to maintain the momentum in the ongoing fight against criminal elements in the state.

Therefore, the spokesman reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order and warned all criminals to desist from their nefarious activities or face decisive action.

The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the attendance of suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the recent Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York, an event she claims has now put her at risk of arrest upon her return to Nigeria.

According to Premium Times, government sources revealed that Akpoti-Uduaghan attended the event without undergoing the required nomination process.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are reportedly leading the probe to determine how she gained access to the meeting and whether any individuals or organizations facilitated her participation.

Calls for an investigation intensified after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s speech at the IPU on March 11, where she alleged that she was being persecuted in Nigeria for rejecting sexual advances from Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

She also acknowledged that, following her suspension, her participation in the meeting was unauthorized.

Speaking with Premium Times on Sunday, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed she had received indications that she might be arrested upon her return to Abuja.

“… I’m aware there are plans underway to have me arrested as soon as I arrive Abuja,” she said.

She further alleged that Nigerian officials attempted to remove her from the United Nations premises following her speech.

“The Senate President Akpabio sent three staff headed by the Chargé D’Affaires of the Nigerian embassy in New York to evacuate me from the United Nations premises right after my speech. I was rescued by parliamentarians from other countries and the security.”

Government sources stated that the investigation would focus on verifying whether she obtained the necessary credentials, whether external parties assisted her, and whether her statements misrepresented Nigeria’s interests.

Addressing how she was able to attend the IPU meeting despite not being an official delegate, Akpoti-Uduaghan explained:

“I registered online as a senator. The suspension does not remove my legitimacy as a senator. I registered online and got a pass.”

“I attended the same programme last year and was already on the mailing list. After I got a pass, I bought my own ticket and funded my trip and participation at the event.”

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer on Sunday, the operations also led to the recovery of several arms and ammunition, while some suspects escaped with gunshot wounds.

In Abia State, police received reports on 9 March 2025 that four individuals had been kidnapped while driving their Toyota RAV4 along New Umuahia Road, Obingwa.
