Joeboy chooses a new path with 'Viva Lavida' [Review]

Although Joeboy likes to shy away from the ostentatiousness that defines music stars, his ubiquitous hits make him a familiar figure in Nigerian music.

Since 2019, he has appeared on several notable hit records, including ‘Alcohol,’ DJ Neptune’s ‘Nobody,’ and CKay’s ‘Love Nwantiti,’ which are part of the biggest Afrobeats songs of the past 5 years.

It’s this collection of viral hits unified by recurring themes of love and merriment that has propelled him to superstardom and set a standard for which fans and listeners alike judge his work.

The singer recently released his third album, ‘Viva Lavida,’ which offers familiar mid-tempo melodies, heartfelt romantic themes, and string-based production that crowds his catalogue.

However, what many listeners would notice is the absence of big-name collaborations, trendy records, and palpable party starters that convey pop star ambitions.

It would appear that Joeboy was done engaging in the rat race of finding the next big hit. He now seems to have settled into an era where he makes music that’s original to his artistry and easily reconcilable with his personality.

“Viva Lavida” is a Spanish phrase that translates to “live life”. It’s this message of love, laughter, and the good life that Joeboy sings about in the album executive produced by ace producer Tempoe, whose contribution gives the project its sonic core.

Melodies are Joeboy’s strong suit, and he molds them to fit into different Afropop and R&B contexts in the album, where Tempoe takes the role of a supporting cast whose innovative production and refreshing vocal contributions add sonic depth.

The fine details of the albums are not necessarily in the themes which are familiar. They are in the experimental production which Joeboy admirably pushes himself to match.

In the opening track ‘Innocent,’ Joeboy admits to being the hopeless, undiscerning romantic who inevitably becomes the victim of unrequited love. A familiar story that is elevated by the sampling and production.

This painful twist to his love life is a recurring theme on the album, where he shares this story of a love gone sour on ‘Street Are Lonely,’ ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘SMH,’ and ‘Magdalene,’ which shines for their innovative production that combines multiple elements such as Highlife, Funk, and Indian musical elements.

A true romantic, he shares his yearning for love on the slow-burning R&B cut ‘Sunset,’ for which he recruited rising Brazilian singer Elena Dara, whose warm vocals lift the record.

Credit must be given to Tempoe, who crafted the sonic direction for the first half of the album through innovative productions that are musically rich and straddle different worlds.

His efforts are notable on ‘Abena,’ ‘Street Are Lonely,’ and ‘Magdalene,’ where listeners will curiously find the sound similar to melodies cut from the same stock as Afrobeats stars Omah Lay, with whom he has extensively collaborated.

These songs form the spine behind Joeboy’s artistry. Mid-tempo melodies, hearty writing, and emotive delivery. Even the promotion and his branding ties to this story of a cool-headed lover who has scored big records yet is unbothered by these feats.

For many listeners, these offerings are familiar yet enjoyable. For others, innovation and the ability to get with the times is the premium currency of a popstar, and Joeboy might be suffering from a shortage of this currency.

However, he did attempt to offer more than just his heartbroken side as he indulges in moments of chest thumping and celebration while retaining the easy pop approach that shapes the album.

On the Folk drums infused ‘Abena’ he softly beckons listeners to the dancefloor. He boasts about his wealth on the hit Afropop record ‘Adenuga’ next to the talented 18-year-old singer Qing Madi who dazzles.

This album sets the foundation for a follow-up that this writer believes would carry a more rounded and fine-tuned product that he envisions.

Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has finally addressed his missing persons report to security agencies, which his mother made.

Recall that a few weeks ago, 2Baba’s mother wrote to the Department of State Services (DSS), seeking help in locating the singer, whom she claimed the family did not know his whereabouts.

Although the singer has been sighted in public on several occasions since the missing person’s report, 2Baba has now addressed it.

The singer spoke on the controversy while performing at a recent comedy show.

The singer’s statement comes weeks after his new love, Natasha Osawaru, also responded to insinuations that she is keeping him against his will.

She pointed out that he was an adult who came to her after choosing her. She also spoke about the controversial bead the singer has in his hands and insisted that it was not diabolical.

In a video, Ushbebe questioned the dynamics of their relationship, suggesting there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Ushbebe expressed unease about how 2Baba follows Natasha around, likening it to a “schoolboy” behaviour.

Nollywood actress and media personality, Omotunde Adebowale-David, also known as Lolo 1, has said she was raped by a male colleague in the broadcast industry six years ago.

The media personality who co-anchors News Central’s breakfast show, Jasiri, made the claim on her podcast, Say My Piece.

While not naming her attacker, Lolo explained that naming him now will only make people criticise her for not speaking out when it happened six years ago, but instead waited until the person became established in the industry.

The actress said she is still traumatised by the attack six years later, noting that she goes into a momentary panic whenever she sees her attacker; something she says happens ‘every other day’.

Her words: “I hardly ever say this, and I am not even ready to tell the full story. The stories of sexual assault. When I discussed it with my daughter yesterday, she held my hand and said, ‘Mummy, you’ve gone through so much.’ And I said I had.

“I remember how many of those things I have to relive. I have been raped only once in my life, and a colleague raped me. I see him every other day. Do you know how traumatised I am? When I see him, I just get into this momentary panic.

“But if a woman of my calibre named him, he’s an established person in the broadcast industry, won’t people say, ‘How come I didn’t speak about it for all these six years until now that he’s taking a prominent TV position?’

Lolo added that women often respond to sexual assault with denial and self-blaming, highlighting the complexities of trauma and recovery.

Popular content creator and actress, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, popularly known as Kiekie, has opened up about how her mother inspires her.

Kiekie spoke during an appearance on the ‘What I Said’ podcast, where she reflected on how her drive for success is influenced by her mother, a successful businesswoman in the male-dominated oil industry.

Speaking about how the strength of character her mother exhibited in her career has unapologetically shaped her journey, she declared that she is not yet half as successful as her mother.

Revealing that she comes from a supportive family, Kiekie talked about being inspired to be loud by her mother’s impressive achievements in a male-dominated industry, which got people questioning her growth.

She said, “I am privileged to come from a supportive family. My mum is a very big businesswoman in the oil space, which, like many other industries, is male-dominated.

“At some point, she was the secretary of the entire association, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria. People said things like, ‘Why would you put a woman in that position?’ and others.

“I look at her and say, if this being is bursting doors like this, I am not even loud enough. I have not even achieved half of what she has achieved industry-wise.”

Shedding more light on being loud, Kiekie revealed that people often question her about being “too loud and always shouting”.

According to Kiekie, her response to this is that she is not loud enough, citing only having over 10 million followers across social media while Nigeria’s population is over 200 million.

She said, “One presenter met me on a red carpet and said, ‘Some people are of the opinion that you are too loud; you shout a lot.’ I told her she needed to be loud enough so I could learn her name.

“You have to be as loud as you can be. I am the one with the voice, I am the one with the dream, I am the one with the vision. I know what I want to achieve.

“Across (social media) platforms now, I have over 10 million followers, and you can compare that to the population of Nigeria (over 200 million people)? Do you see that my voice is not loud enough?”
