It felt like entire world turned agaisnt me Jonathan

Jonathan said losing the 2015 election was the most challenging moment of his political career but was grateful for the experience.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described how he felt after losing the 2015 presidential election, saying it would feel like the entire world turned against you.

Jonathan, who ran on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform was denied a re-election by Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 15,424,921 votes compared to his opponent’s 12,853,162 votes.

The election was significant for two reasons: it marked the first instance in Nigeria’s history where an incumbent president failed to be re-elected, while it was also the first time the PDP would lose a presidential election since the return to democracy in 1999.

Speaking at the inaugural Raymond Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture on Friday, October 25, 2024, Jonathan recalled how he felt after losing the election.

He said the period represented one of the most challenging moments of his political career.

He recalled that upon receiving the election results, he was overwhelmed by a wave of emotion, which felt like the entire world had turned against him.

The former President also acknowledged the supportive role played by the late Raymond Dokpesi, prior to his transition of power to Buhari.

He said the then Chairman of Daar Communications counselled him to look beyond the event and embrace the next possibilities.

“It is not easy to lose an election as a president. You will think the whole world is against you. But then, Dokpesi invited me before I handed over. I remember what he said to me when I lost the election.

“There were so many senior Nigerians (elder statesmen) who spoke. After I listened to all the conversations, he congratulated me and encouraged me to look beyond the election. This is how I commemorated that session.

“That communication gave me hope and helped me not necessarily for the transition hour ahead of me but also in my spiritual life as a private citizen. If you read my book, My Transition Hours, I explain it more elaborately,” he said.

Alhaji Abdulmajid Dan Bilki Commander, a Kano-based chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has disclosed that campaigning for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election was the biggest regret of his life.

Commander stressed that in his entire life, there has never been any decision he regretted so much than campaigning for the former Lagos State Governor.

According to the ruling party chieftain, the President has failed many Nigerians who voted for him in 2023, given the performance indicators available to every Nigerian.

Commander, who claimed to remain an active APC member, regretted dedicating his time and resources to convincing people to vote for the party.

“It pains me, but it is the truth, and let the truth be told. I am an active member of APC, but I must admit that Nigeria’s administration under APC has failed Nigerians, and as an individual who had dedicated his time and resources in convincing people to vote for the party, I want to state here that I am regretting my action,” he told Daily Trust.

The Kano politician also declared that he must seek their forgiveness as a representative of the masses, given that the APC-led government has not delivered on its promises.

Commander added that Nigerians are suffering, and their expectations from the APC government have not been met.

“Nigerians are hungry and angry. Their security not guaranteed and governance lopsided, they couldn’t afford two square meals per day,” he said.

Another Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Salisu Koko, who represents the Koko-Besse/Maiyama Constituency of Kebbi State, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Amos Magaji, representing Kaduna’s Zango Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency, defected to the ruling APC during Tuesday’s plenary.

The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, who made the announcement on the floor of the house during plenary in Abuja on Wednesday, told the APC caucus to welcome Koko as one of them.

Abbas quoted Koko as attributing his defection to the protracted crisis in the opposition PDP.

However, the Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, raised a point of order, saying there was no ‘protracted’ crisis in PDP.

Chinda urged the house to acknowledge the consequences of defection without compliance with the provisions of the constitution.

Supporting the minority leader, Rep. Ben Etanabene amplified what he called the consequences of the defection, which, according to him, included the lawmaker’s vacation from his seat.

The speaker, however, overruled the point order, saying that the house had no powers to implement such constitutional provisions.

He, therefore, urged the aggrieved lawmakers to approach the appropriate quarters to address the issue.

Kudos to the President’s media team on the first Presidential Media Chat. President Tinubu was bold, brilliant and showed brightness in expressivity

This, I dare say, he is a damn good President. And I should know, I worked for two past Presidents,

Recall that Tinubu spoke to select journalists at his Lagos residence on Monday, in his first such media appearance since he assumed office about 18 months ago.

Topics discussed included subsidy removal, tax bills, economic reforms, size of governance and corruption.
