There are actors who go beyond role interpretation in front of the camera to production in Nollywood. While they’ve maintained their acting prowess, they’ve also found themselves taking the reins behind the camera. But they are far less known as producers than as actors.

Nollywood is a dynamic industry. It is accommodating of people of all ages, sizes, colours, backgrounds, and most especially, dreams.

Some enter into the scene and become notable for their works as screen actors while others take on the managerial seat as producers who bring an entire film project to life from scratch.

And then there are those who have a flair for both acting and producing. They can kill it in front of the camera as the actor or behind as the producer. Let’s look at, in no particular order, the seven Nollywood actors you probably didn’t know are also producers.

Efe Irele

Efe Irele is widely known as an actress but the film star has also produced a number of movies. In 2021, she produced her first epic movie, Secrets of the Gods which she also starred in. During the behind-the-scenes shoot, the Edo State native talked about how hectic production can be. “It has been such an eventful couple of days. The first day of set was terrible. And that’s what I always say about production: you can plan, plan, plan, but guess what, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong,” she said. Some of the works Irele has produced altogether include Stronger Together (2018), Wrong Kind of War (2018), Blind Voice (2019), and Bouquet and Everything After (2021).

Baaj Adebule

Anywhere Baaj Adebule steps into, people will first regard him as an actor. But the Ogun State indigene born Bandele Adetolu Adebule has a production house called House of Baaj Pictures which he launched in 2015. As a producer, he won the award for Best Short Film in Africa at the Zafaa Global Awards for his short film, Seeing Betrayal which he released under his production company.

Florence Okechukwu and Iyke Okechukwu

Nollywood sweethearts, Florence Okechukwu and Iyke Okechukwu met each other on the set of Tinsel as actors interpreting the roles of on-screen couple, Ene and Chuks. But the lovebirds, who have now been married for 11 years, jointly own a production company known as 1704 Productions. Together, they have released several titles including The Reveal, Out of Sight, and Open Secret.

Ivie Okujaye

Ivie Okujaye is recognised for her craft as an actor. After winning the Amstel Malta Box Office reality show in 2009, she got her first lead role as an actor in the movie Alero’s Symphony. However, something in her wanted to explore movie production. She is the producer of the 2014 dance musical film, Make a Move directed by Niyi Akinmolayan.

Adunni Ade

While Adunni Ade has featured in over 250 films as an actress, not many people know that she executively produced the movie Soólè (2021) which is among the highest-grossing Nigerian movies of all time. It earned over ₦51 million at the cinemas within just nine weeks of its release. Adunni Ade is also the owner of Lou-Ellen Clara Films (LEC FILMS), a film production outfit with the main purpose of creating and telling the true Nigerian story.

Bolanle Ninalowo

Bolanle Ninalowo is a skilled actor popular for some of his iconic characters including Jobe which he played in the movie Picture Perfect (2016). But what you may not know is that the entertainer’s first attempt into Nollywood was as a movie producer. He produced his first movie titled Rebirth. The movie sheds light on the realities of HIV/AIDs and it premiered in Chicago in 2010.

Joeboy & Tempoe combine for new single 'SMH'

Following an exciting 2024 with the release of his stellar two-pack project ‘Adenuga x Concerning’ and The Lavida Experience concert in Lagos, Nigerian hitmaker, Joeboy is gearing up to shake up 2025 as well starting with his single, ‘SMH’.

The release also coincides with the first anniversary of the artist’s record label, Young Legend

‘SMH’ sits as one of Joeboy’s most ambitious attempts yet. It samples ‘Neela Nilave’ (a Tamil song from the album “Mandhera Vasal”) backed by an intricate bounce and wispy production by longtime collaborator, Tempoe (“Sip (Alcohol)”, “Don’t Call Me Back”, “Better”).

On the mid-tempo number, Joeboy enters a contemplative head space as he delivers soulful vocals while directly addressing his love interest on the pitfalls of their relationship.

Speaking on the track, he said, “There’s a certain clarity of mind that hits you when you finally understand that not all relationships are supposed to last forever. Some are better as phases with lessons to learn. Simple as. Whatever seems to be missing no matter how hard you try is missing for a reason.”

With ‘SMH’Joeboy continues to showcase his abilities as an artist and businessman of international repute with limitless drive and inspiration. 

2025 has gotten off to an eventful start for Joeboy who recently launched his foundation aimed at assisting underserved communities.

The song comes ahead of Joeboy’s upcoming third album titled ‘Lavida Boy’ set for release later in 2024.

Renowned rapper and fashion mogul Kanye West has once again found himself at the center of controversy following his recent outburst on social media.

The rapper took to X, formerly Twitter, to address the criticism about his wife Bianca Censori’s fashion choices, particularly her red carpet look at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

In a heated post on February 7, 2025, Kanye wrote, “I HAVE DOMINION OVER MY WIFE THIS AINT NO WOKE AS FEMINIST SHIT SHES WITH A BILLIONAIRE WHY WOULD SHE LISTEN TO ANY OF YOU DUMB ASS BROKE BITCHES.”

He debunked the notion that he forced her to wear the naked dress on the red carpet while adding that she wouldn’t have worn it without his say-so.

Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, made a surprise appearance at the 67th Grammy Awards and surely surprised everyone after Censori took her coat off to reveal her see-through outfit on the red carpet.

The pair showed up at the prestigious event held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 2, 2025, and quickly became the topic of headlines and controversy after Kanye’s wife unveiled her inner outfit. The see-through piece left nothing to the imagination, instantly stunning onlookers and social media users; however, the rapper himself remained clad in a black fit.

The naked outfit, designed by the rapper became insanely controversial on social mediae, with many slamming him for deisigning such a dress.

Pheelz earns his first gold certification in the United States

Nigerian music star Pheelz has achieved a career milestone as his 2022 hit single ‘Finesse’ featuring BNXN received a Gold certification in the United States from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

This marks Pheelz’s first Gold certification in America where ‘Finesse’ enjoyed commercial success marked by entries on the Billboard Global 200 and US Afrobeats Songs charts.

Released on March 3, 2022, ‘Finesse’ became an instant sensation, fueled by its infectious melodies, catchy lyrics, and a TikTok snippet that birthed the #FolakeChallenge.

The track, produced by Miichkel became Pheelz’s biggest crossover hit with over 180 million streams on Spotify alone. He also performed it at the Red Carpet of the 2022 BET Awards.

‘Finesse’ is one of the songs on his 2023 EP ‘Pheelz Good’ spawned the hit songs ‘Electricity’ featuring Davido and ‘Stand By You’.

Since he kicked off his career as an artist after producing hits for Olamide, Fireboy DML, and Davido, Pheelz has become one of Afrobeats’ most consistent hitmakers.

2024 was another eventful year for Pheelz who released the second installment of his ‘Pheelz Good’ EP. He also wrote, produced, and featured on Usher’s ‘Ruin’ which earned him a nomination for Best Afrobeats at the 2024 MTV VMAs.
