Heat Wave in Nigeria: 5 important lifestyle adjustments you need to know to stay safe and cool

Nigeria is currently baking under an intense heatwave, and lets be honestthis weather is not for the weak! The heat wave has everyone sweating profusely, feeling drained, complaining and desperately searching for shade (or an AC that actually works). If youve been struggling to stay cool and refreshed, youre not alone. But dont worryweve got you covered! Here are five easy, practical ways to beat the heat and stay comfortable:1. Drink Water Like Its Your JobStaying hydrated isnt a suggestionits a must. With all the sweating that comes with this intense heat, your body is losing fluids faster than you think. Aim for at least three litres of water a day, and dont wait until youre thirsty to drink up. If youre sweating a lot, consider adding electrolytes to your water to replenish lost minerals.Pro tip: keep a water bottle with you at all times. Its your best friend in this weather! 2. Take Cold Showers (Your Body Will Thank You!)One of the fastest ways to cool down? A refreshing cold shower. And if you want to level up that cooling effect, Dettol 5C Cool is the ultimate heatwave hack. Dettol Cool offers triple-action benefits to help you beat the heat. It kills 100% of germs, ensuring superior hygiene even in sweaty conditions. It provides a cooling sensation that reduces skin temperature by up to 5 degrees and offers long-lasting protection against body odour, keeping you feeling fresh all day.Nothing feels better than stepping out of a cool shower feeling clean and refreshed! 3. Wear Light, Airy Clothes That Let You BreatheYour outfit can make or break your comfort level in this heat. Ditch the thick, tight clothes and go for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Loose-fitting outfits let air circulate around your body, keeping you cool.Stick to light colours like white, beige, or pastelsthey reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it (unlike black, which basically turns you into a human oven). And if you can, avoid synthetic fabricsthey trap heat and make you sweat even more! 4. Avoid the Sun When Its at Its WorstIf you can help it, stay indoors between 11 AM and 4 PMthats when the sun is doing the most! Keep your curtains or blinds closed to block out extra heat.If you must step outside: Take a bath with Dettol 5C Cool and wear light clothing (see point 2 & 3). Rock a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. Apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn and harmful UV rays. Walk in the shade or carry an umbrellayes, even the sun deserves boundaries! 5. Get Creative with Fans & Cooling HacksIf you have AC, set it to a moderate temperature so you dont get a shock when stepping outside. No AC? No stress! Try these easy cooling tricks: Place a bowl of ice in front of your fan to create a cool breeze. Use a damp cloth or spray bottle to mist your skin for instant refreshment. Keep windows and doors closed during the hottest part of the day, then open them at night for better ventilation. Heatwaves arent just annoyingthey can be risky if youre not taking care of yourself. Whether youre indoors, running errands, or just trying to make it through the day, staying hydrated, taking cold showers, and making small adjustments will help you handle the heat like a pro. So, drink up, stay fresh with Dettol 5C Cool, and dont let the heatwave steal your shine! The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released controversial social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), from custody.
In a video posted on Instagram by blogger Tunde Ednut on the evening of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, VeryDarkMan can be seen sitting in the back of a car alongside his lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, at the wheel.
In the video clip, the activist characteristically laughed off insinuations that his arrest was connected to an alleged money laundering scheme.
He said he’s spending so much on charitable causes that some people begin to question where he gets the money from, unaware that he incurs debt in the process.
“Anyways, we’re outside. With my lawyer, of course,” he screamed ecstatically. “And you know what we do: We can never get inside when we have our lawyer by our side,” he continued.

FG plays Nnamdi Kanuâs broadcast, videos in court to establish alleged terrorism charge

The ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, continued on Wednesday May 7, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja with the Federal government prosecution counsel playing some of the Radio Biafra broadcast and videos made in open court to establish the allegation of terrorism preferred against him. The broadcast and video documents, which were marked as exhibits, were tendered through the 2nd prosecution witness (PW-2), identified as BBB, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The recordings were said to have featured statements allegedly made by Kanu during periods of national unrest, including the 2020 EndSARS protests and various security incidents in the South-East. According to reports, in one of the broadcasts, Kanu was reportedly heard lamenting Fulani herders attacks and accusing Nigerian governors of betraying the South-East region. He also reportedly made controversial remarks about prominent political figures, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The content of the broadcasts reportedly ranged from calls for self-defense to direct criticisms of perceived government failures. It was gathered that a key point of contention was the interpretation of the broadcasts, as while the prosecution argued that the statements incited violence and promoted secessionist agendas, Kanus defense team, led by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), maintained that the broadcasts were political expressions protected under constitutional rights.Travel guides The prosecutions witness, under examination, confirmed Kanus identity in the videos and attempted to link the broadcasts to violent incidents, including attacks on security facilities. However, when questioned on certain charges, the witness admitted being unaware that some of the said charges had been previously struck out by the court.A notable portion of todays hearing also centered around the 2017 proscription of IPOB. The defense made no objections to the admission of the proscription document but pointed out that the ban was imposed through an ex parte order without IPOBs legal representation. The court was also presented with a letter from the former Attorney General of the Federation directing Kanus arrest, a document which the defence insisted was not initially served to them. Justice Omotosho had earlier insisted that all evidence must be duly served to the defence in the interest of fair hearing. The trial was adjourned to Thursday, May 8, for continuation of the examination of prosecution witnesses. 10 practical tips traders use to switch between naira and dollar tied goods

By combining well timed purchasing decisions, adaptive pricing methods and transparent explanations to customers, they keep inventories sourced in naira alongside items whose costs follow the dollar both affordable and profitable.
Whether dealing with electronic devices, imported fabrics or staple foods, traders adjust order timing, packaging sizes and supplier choices to match current exchange fluctuations.
The 10 strategies below reveal how experienced sellers pivot fluidly between local currency and dollar aligned merchandise to maintain competitiveness and financial strength in a volatile forex environment.

1. Monitor exchange rate updates
Traders subscribe to several forex platforms and activate alerts for significant naira to dollar movements. Early notification of shifts allows them to revise selling prices or postpone restocking until more favorable rates apply.
2. Schedule bulk purchases when rates improve
When the naira briefly strengthens, traders place large orders for goods priced in dollars. As the naira weakens, they reduce import volumes and increase sourcing of products made locally and priced in naira.
3. Apply tiered pricing categories
Stock acquired at different exchange values is grouped into separate price levels. Clear signage distinguishes naira based items from those tied to the dollar, giving customers budget options while protecting trader margins.
4. Offer varied packaging sizes
Providing small units or mixed bundles enables traders to adjust unit costs without updating every price. Mini packs or sampler bundles soften the impact of currency swings and keep products accessible to all buyers.
5. Maintain a dollar reserve account
Sellers hold a portion of their working capital in dollar denominated accounts or digital wallets funded when the naira is at its strongest. These reserves cover urgent replenishments without resorting to spot purchases at peak rates.

6. Cultivate multiple supplier relationships
By working with both local manufacturers and a range of international importers, traders can switch sourcing according to the prevailing exchange conditions, leaning on naira priced suppliers when the dollar rises and vice versa.
7. Use dynamic restock thresholds
Inventory tracking systems flag reorder points based on stock levels and rate forecasts. Traders adjust thresholds upward for dollar linked items when the naira falls, reducing exposure to sudden cost spikes.
8. Communicate pricing logic to customers
Onsite notices explain the link between currency value and product prices. When customers see live exchange rates alongside price adjustments, they understand rate driven changes and remain engaged rather than discouraged.
9. Secure forward purchase agreements
Some traders negotiate contracts that fix naira prices for future deliveries of high value goods. By locking in costs ahead of time, they shield their margins from unexpected currency swings.
10. Recycle turnover into fast moving goods
Profits from dollar denominated sales are quickly invested in high turnover products sold in naira, such as perishables or basic household items, when the naira is under stress. Once the currency stabilises, traders resume stocking higher margin imports.
These adaptable methods allow market traders to manage risk, maintain customer trust and safeguard earnings as they move seamlessly between naira based and dollar related merchandise in Nigeria’s ever shifting forex landscape.
