“Funke Akindele paid me just ₦90k after one month on set” – Actor Ijoba Lande speaks out

Nollywood actor and content creator Ijoba Lande has revealed that he got paid ₦90,000 for a month on a set with actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele.

Lande has stirred conversation in the Nigerian entertainment industry following a candid revelation about his experience working with one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, Funke Akindele.

In a recent disclosure that has since gone viral on social media, Lande recounted how he worked on a film project under Akindele’s production for an entire month, only to be paid what he described as a disappointing amount.

“There was a time Funke Akindele called me for a movie production at Amen Estate, and we spent one month there. I was shocked when she gave me 90,000 after spending one month,” he lamented.

The skit maker, known for his comic online videos and growing popularity in the Yoruba film scene, shared his story as both a warning and a learning moment for upcoming actors.

Lande emphasised that while the allure of working with a top-tier filmmaker like Funke Akindele is undeniable, it should not come at the expense of one’s self-worth or professional standards.

“I have learnt my lessons. I will always state my charges before going to any location. When she called me, I was too excited to discuss payment, only to end up with N90k after one month,” he added.

Industry shockwaves

The actor’s admission has triggered mixed reactions online, with many expressing disappointment, while others have questioned the context behind the payment.

Some commenters suggested that Lande’s lack of initial negotiation contributed to the outcome, while others criticised what they see as a broader issue of underpayment in Nollywood, especially for up-and-coming talents.

A user, “Truecrimedaniel” had this to say:

“This is not about Aunty Funke or anyone, this is about Business. It’s about knowing your worth and negotiating your pay before accepting a job. Even Dangote or Elon musk will pay u chicken change if u did not negotiate with them. It’s business! Not charity!”

An upset user, Bukkyonradio responded: “Yes but this means you lack integrity if you’re waiting on someone to price themselves better before you offer them better.”

Another user stated: “I like Funke but have been hearing a lot of negative about how she treat her staff members Omo e bad but na allegedly.”

The Reality of Nollywood’s pay scale

Lande’s story sheds light on a recurring issue within the Nigerian film industry: payment transparency and fair compensation.

Nollywood, despite being one of the largest film industries globally by output, still struggles with standardising rates for actors, especially newer or less established ones.

While A-list actors and actresses command substantial fees, many supporting actors, extras, and crew members often work under vague verbal agreements or out of sheer passion and hope for future opportunities.

Ijoba Lande’s confession underscores the risks of going into any project without a clear financial agreement, regardless of the production’s profile.

Last year, at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), Chimezie Imo left not just the stage but hearts in tears; literally.

The rising Nollywood star, known for his emotionally raw performances and boy-next-door charm, won the prestigious Trailblazer Award, and let’s just say that moment became one for the books. Now, almost a year later, we’re all asking the same thing: Where is Chimezie Imo now?

Well, he’s booked and busy. Like, really busy.

That AMVCA moment

If you missed it, Chimezie’s AMVCA speech was a whole mood. As he clutched the trophy and let the tears flow, the crowd erupted in love and applause.

Later, he admitted, “I cried when I got my award at the AMVCA,” and honestly? We would’ve cried, too. That win wasn’t just a gold statue; it was a long overdue validation.

Before that night, Chimezie had been grinding for years. And it wasn’t easy. He’s been open about his struggles; at one point, things got so tough he considered moving abroad just to make ends meet. “I couldn’t even pay rent as an actor,” he shared in a candid interview. Imagine the talent we could’ve lost to that kind of frustration.

Post-AMVCA glow-up

Since that win? Game-changer.

Chimezie has been on a roll, snagging roles in some of Nollywood’s most exciting recent projects. He showed us range in:

Sista – Drama, tears, the works.
The Trade – Gritty, gripping, and powerful.
One Too Many – A thriller that had us on edge.
Over The Bridge – A reflective story about life and relationships.

Each role has been another reminder that this guy is not just a pretty face, he’s got layers.

So… where can you watch him this April?

If you’re wondering where to get your Chimezie fix this month, grab your planner—or better yet, just screen-grab this list. April is basically Chimezie Imo Month:

April 5, 6, 12, 13 – Throne Room (Stage Play at Terra Kulture, Lagos)

Yes, you read that right, he’s back on stage! In this satirical play exploring Nigeria’s complex relationship with religion, Chimezie proves that he’s not just made for the screen. Throne Room is witty, sharp, and emotional, and watching him perform live? That’s a whole different level of magic.

April 11 – A Lagos Love Story (Netflix)

Romance, drama, and all the Lagos vibes you can handle. In this Inkblot Production’s Netflix debut, Chimezie stars alongside Mike Afolarin, Jemima Osunde, and a crew of Nollywood faves. It’s about the messy, hilarious, and heartfelt journey of love in the city that never stops buzzing.

April 18 – Makemation (Cinemas)

Ever seen Chimezie in an AI-themed sci-fi drama? Now’s your chance. Makemation dives into the intersection of artificial intelligence and Nigerian society, and it’s as cool as it sounds. The movie has already made waves at international tech events. Now, it’s coming to a cinema near you.

April 18 – Owambe Thieves (In Cinemas)

Also dropping the same day as Makemation, Owambe Thieves brings the drama (and the dance floor) in a story full of vibrant culture, deception, and family chaos. And Chimezie? He’s right in the middle of the storm.

What’s Next for the trailblazer?

At just 32, Chimezie Imo is giving main character energy, and Nollywood is finally giving him his flowers. From stage plays to streaming hits to cinema premieres, his post-AMVCA career looks like the glow-up we all want.

Davido announces white wedding date with Chioma

Published

Nigerian music superstar, Davido, has officially revealed plans for a white wedding with his wife, Chioma, set to hold in Miami this August.

Speaking during an interview on The Breakfast Club, Davido compared Nigerian marriage customs to those in the United States, noting how family dynamics often play a significant role in African unions.

He said,

Back home, the culture in some households is, for example, a lot of men grew up with their mum so she’s everything. You know those kinds of households that even if they get married, they can’t leave their mum, she must be in the house. So anything the husband does right or wrong, she’s supporting the husband.

The singer, who previously held a lavish traditional wedding in Nigeria, shared the update while reflecting on cultural differences and the intense public attention surrounding their relationship.

He added,

That’s the mentality in Nigeria: the same thing is for women, they must always support their daughters. Meanwhile in America, it is just the man and woman when they get married. In Nigeria, you never really leave that family. Have you seen a Nigerian wedding?

He went on to recall how his traditional wedding turned into a nationwide celebration and how the white wedding in August 2025 would be a continuation.

I’m doing my white wedding in Miami in August. The wedding I did was traditional, it was like a carnival in Nigeria, like a holiday. The whole world stood still. Me and my wife’s relationship was in the public eye, especially after I did that one song. So a lot of things happened. Even apart from losing our child, I messed up a lot of times so that full circle moment everyone was like finally she can get what she deserves.

The 32-year-old Atlanta-born Grammy nominee also added that his wife is the best because she keeps her affairs private.

My wife, you can never see her go to any interview or take a phone to say ‘oh, my husband did this’ or see her go on live — like the normal things. And I appreciate her for that because she could.

The effervescent singer went on to say that no one is perfect, and he would be lying if he said they are.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club, Davido was quizzed about his relationship with fellow superstars Wizkid and Burna Boy, and the hitmaker stated that he no longer has a personal relationship with them.

“I don’t have a personal relationship with them. I did at some point,” Davido explained

He further added that although the focus is primarily on him, Wizkid, and Burna Boy who are called the Big 3, Afrobeats’ global advancement extends beyond them with a new generation of stars paying big roles in exporting the music.

“The conversation is bigger than the Big 3 right now. There’s Rema, there’s Ayra Starr, and so many artists to just make this thing about us, and I think that right now, three of us understand that.”
