FG calls on retailers to reduce prices as food costs drop across major markets

The federal government has urged retailers to reflect on the reduction in food prices and to shun exploiting consumers.

Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, stated this on Tuesday during the 2025 Wheat Farmers Green Field Day, at Dabi village in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa.

He decried the nonchalant attitude of retailers to reflect the reduction in their sales despite a drop in prices, describing it as unpatriotic and unacceptable.

The federal government is aware of the significant drop in the prices of food items across major markets, particularly for essential commodities such as flour, sugar, rice and pasta.

However, it is deeply concerning that many retailers, bakers, and shop owners have refused to reflect this reduction in their selling prices, thereby denying Nigerians the relief they deserve.

In previous months, stakeholders in the retail value chain raised concerns about the rising cost of food items. Now that the prices have dropped, such as flour, which fell from N81,000 per bag to below N60,000, Spaghetti has fallen from N20,000 to N15,000.

It is only fair and just to let consumers benefit from food price reduction, Kyari said.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure food availability and engage with relevant stakeholders to reflect the current market realities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised in collaboration between the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, federal and Jigawa state government.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu has strategically positioned key allies across various sectors to secure his re-election in 2027.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, March 17, Igbokwe asserted that Tinubu began planning for a second term even before assuming office.

He expressed confidence that opposition candidates would struggle to defeat the president.

“The truth is that those who want to challenge PBAT in 2027 are not as smart as he is,” Igbokwe wrote.

“Before he even stepped into Aso Villa, he had started planning for 2027. His challengers may not know that the Apamaku (master strategist) had already planted his men everywhere.”

His statement comes amid allegations from opposition figures that Tinubu is deliberately causing internal crises within rival political parties to weaken any challenge to his rule.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the ruling APC of orchestrating leadership struggles within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).

According to Atiku, these alleged interferences are part of a broader strategy to suppress political opposition ahead of the next general elections.

While the presidency has not officially responded to these claims, political analysts say the growing tensions suggest an intense battle ahead for Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

As the Anambra State gubernatorial election approaches, concerns have emerged within the Labour Party (LP) over allegations that one of its aspirants may have undisclosed ties to the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

A senior Labour Party figure, who requested anonymity, expressed worry that an external force might be backing the aspirant with the intent of weakening LP’s prospects in the November 8 election.

The chieftain alleged that APGA is reportedly facilitating the aspirant’s political engagements, particularly his local government tour.
