The former Atletico Madrid star was keen to point out that he rejected an approach to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles
Nigerian-Spanish striker Samu Omorodion has revealed that he recently refused a potential call up to the Super Eagles before he played at the Olympics for La Roja.
Omorodion rejects Nigeria approach
Omorodion is still eligible to represent both Nigeria and Spain, but his recent activity suggests that he has no intention of ever playing in the green and white.
The former Atletico Madrid striker in a recent interview with Dario AS revealed that he was approached by the Nigerian Football Federation to represent the Super Eagles, but chose to decline the invite with his focus solely on making his mark with Spain.
The Melilla-born striker was adamant about his position on his international future, in another interview where he said, “I don’t think about Nigeria. My goal is to debut with the Senior team and make my career in Spain.”
Omorodion’s career with Spain so far
Although Omorodion has not yet made the leap with Spain’s senior side, the Porto striker has been a regular with the youth teams.
Omorodion has already made 12 appearances across U19 and U21 levels for Spain, scoring three goals in those games.
He was also part of the Spain U23 squad that claimed the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, playing four games and registering a goal at the tournament.
Reports suggest that Omorodion could be handed a senior call up to La Roja in the upcoming international break after enjoying a fine start to his Porto career with five goals in four matches, and the move to the senior side will almost certainly end any hopes of him playing in Nigeria.
