EFCC Prioritizes Crime Prevention Despite Major Milestones in Convictions and Recoveries. Under the leadership of Chairman Ola Olukoyede, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made significant strides in the fight against corruption, recovering over N200 billion and securing approximately 3,000 convictions in one year. Olukoyede, appointed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023, has overseen these successes as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to tackle financial crime across Nigeria.
Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s spokesman, revealed these achievements during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday. He emphasized that these figures, which also include substantial recoveries in foreign currencies such as dollars and euros, highlight the commission’s robust progress. However, Uwujaren noted that while recoveries and convictions draw media attention, the agency’s primary focus is crime prevention.
“Of the conviction figures, 70% pertain to cybercrime cases,” Uwujaren stated, with young Nigerians comprising the majority of those convicted. He reiterated that the EFCC’s current strategy is geared more toward prevention than prosecution, reflecting the belief that “prevention is better than cure.”
To this end, the EFCC has ramped up efforts to educate the youth on the dangers of cybercrime and has taken measures to tackle corruption within the public sector, particularly in contract and procurement processes. Uwujaren stressed that preventing procurement fraud before it occurs could save the country significant resources.
Despite its notable milestones, the EFCC is placing greater emphasis on proactive measures to reduce corruption, aiming to curb fraudulent practices before they take root, especially in areas that severely affect public funds and governance
