Don’t teach your daughters to rely on someone financially – Simi

Dont teach your daughters to rely on someone financially

She encourages women to support one another.

Nigerian singer Simi has emphasised the vital importance of financial independence for women, urging parents to raise daughters who understand the value of self-sufficiency.

In a recent video posted to her official TikTok account, Simi encouraged women to take control of their financial futures.

She said, “Please do not raise your daughters to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is rely on someone that they don’t have to take care of themselves. When someone is spoiling you, it shouldn’t be because you cannot spoil yourself. As they are spoiling you, you too are spoiling them, and let them know that you’re standing strong.”

The singer spoke about the security that comes with financial independence for women, stressing that independence helps them stay protected.

“There is security in knowing that you have got yourself. A woman’s economic power is in protecting herself fending for herself and being able to confidently acknowledge that she is a complete person. You deserve good things; you need to occupy space,” she continued.

Acknowledging her own privilege, Simi reflected on her upbringing and the support she received.

She explained, “I admit that I say this from a place of privilege. I grew up among people who believed in me, pushed me and encouraged me. I had chances that took me from here to here but some women had to work with less.”

“Less love, less faith, less kindness and opportunities, and that’s where we are a society have to step in and when you are in a position to give a deserving woman an opportunity, please give it to her,” she appealed.

Nigerian disc jockey, Florence Otedola, aka DJ Cuppy, has offered a heartfelt prayer that this year’s Valentine’s Day will be the last she celebrates as an unmarried woman.

Cuppy shared the prayer via her X handle as she wished herself a happy Valentine’s Day.

She wrote, “Happy #ValentinesDay to me! Manifesting that this is my last one unmarried. Lord, do your thing!”

The 32-year-old billionaire heiress has had a rollercoaster love life. She’s been romantically involved with notable figures, including former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe, but their relationship ended in 2017 due to long-distance struggles.

She later dated music executive Asa Asika, but their romance hit the wall around 2020. In 2022, she got engaged to British boxer Ryan Taylor, and the couple often shared affectionate moments online. However, by 2023, rumours of a split started circulating, and she later confirmed she was single again.

DJ Cuppy, born on November 11, 1992, has had a successful disc jockey career. In 2014, she was the resident DJ at the MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban.

After then, she played at the Tatler and Christie’s Art Ball in London and at the Financial Times Business of Luxury Summit in Mexico City.

In July 2014, she released House of Cuppy as her first compilation mix in London and Lagos, before launching it in New York on 2 September 2014. With House of Cuppy, she produced EDM-esque remixes of songs by leading afropop artists.

That same year, Cuppy also launched the London-based music management and content production business, Red Velvet Music Group.
