The statement was issued on Sunday in Lagos by Prof. Gold Emmanuel, Senior Special Assistant, Communications & Intelligence and Diaspora, Office of Atiku Abubakar.

Abubakar called on Nigerian citizens not to give up on the nation, regardless of the current socio-economic challenges.

According to him, the state of the economy has led to untold hardship for millions of Nigerians and the poverty index has continued to rise.

“I urge you not to give up just yet. Your strength and resilience are crucial to Nigeria’s future,” Abubakar said.

“Your prayers and support can help bring about the transformation we need.

“I believe in the potential of our great nation and I know that with collective effort, we can overcome the current challenges and build a prosperous Nigeria for all.”

The former vice president also encouraged them to continue to support their families and friends back home.

Abubakar, the 2023 PDP Presidential Candidate, also urged the Federal Government to release detained protesters being charged with treason.

Only Northern alliance with South-South can rescue Nigeria – El-Rufai

Malam Nasiru El-Rufai, former Kaduna State Governor, has proposed that the North needs a solid alliance with the South-South to forge a better Nigeria.

The erstwhile Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister spoke during a condolence visit to the family of Chief Edwin Clark, a staunch Niger Delta advocate, on Friday, February 21, 2025. The elder statesman died last Monday.

He was led to the condolence visit by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

El-Rufai traveled down memory lane, recalling the political partnership between the North and the South-South back in the day, concluding that a reignition of such an alliance has become necessary to “save” Nigeria.

“In the 60s, 70s and 80s, the traditional political partners of the north was the south-south. Let us not forget that. Let us go back to that. Let us save this country because it really requires saving. We need a rescue operation,” el-Rufai said.

El-Rufai gearing up for 2027?

The former Governor’s remarks came barely a week after he shared a post on his X account, in which the author warned President Bola Tinubu’s supporters and some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) not to go against the North.

All this is happening amid a reported feud between El-Rufai and the President, triggered by the latter’s alleged about-turn in appointing the former minister even after he had nominated him.

The former FCT minister is said to have switched allegiance to Atiku’s camp as part of efforts to form a coalition to oust Tinubu in 2027.

Wike's camp holds South-South zonal congress despite PDP NWC's disapproval

The re-elected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South Zonal Vice Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, has described the ongoing crisis within the party as self-inflicted.

He noted that a few members had disregarded the party’s constitution in favour of personal interests.

Speaking at the South-South Zonal Congress of the PDP in Calabar on Saturday, Orbih urged the party faithful to make the necessary sacrifices to revive and strengthen the party.

He called for the election of officers who would uphold the party’s constitution in the zone, emphasising that such individuals must also have the fear of God.

Orbih said: “We must follow the party’s guidelines to revive it. These guidelines are subject to the Constitution.

“The power to elect new officers of the party is not subject to anything but the constitution.

“We must start rebuilding the party from here. The party cannot dictate who an individual should associate with, nor determine their friends or enemies.”

Similarly, Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, noted that, by all indications, the party remained strong in the zone.

He commended Orbih and his executive members for maintaining the party’s stability despite its challenges.

However, he urged the party’s leadership to speak truth to power if it truly wanted to regain its lost glory.

Wike added that the zonal congress held in Calabar would be the last to elect the Zonal Working Committee.

“Presently, we have leaders who can’t speak the truth and are full of betrayal.

“No part of the constitution says that congress should not be held when some persons are indisposed. No other congress will be held after this.

“This is our job. This is our terrain. We are not new to this. The constitution didn’t say that a national working committee shall conduct the zonal congress.

“This is the final congress in the South-South. We don’t need quantity but quality,” he said.

In his address, Donald Duke, the former Governor of Cross River, urged PDP members in the zone to remain focused and fully committed to the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that all the immediate past zonal officers elected four years ago in Port Harcourt were re-elected during the congress in Calabar.

They were all returned unopposed, but an election was conducted to reaffirm their positions.

The zonal executive consists of 10 members and six ex-officio members.

The congress was attended by former governors and former and serving members of the National Assembly, among others.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all 30 chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats in the local government election held on Saturday in Osun.

Hashim Abioye, Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), announced the results on state-owned television, Osun Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC), in Osogbo.

Abioye stated that 18 political parties participated in the election.

“I want to announce that the local council election, conducted by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), has been successfully concluded.

“It was conducted in compliance with constitutional provisions, extant laws, regulations, and guidelines.

“The election was held to fill vacancies in 332 wards and 30 local government areas of Osun State,” Abioye added.

He said 18 political parties contested, and the results have been submitted to the commission.

According to him, PDP candidates in all 332 wards emerged as winners from the available results.

“Their names are listed in the schedule in this text. As Chief Returning Officer, I hereby declare each one duly elected chairmen and councillors of their respective areas.

“The results are available for anyone interested in certified true copies.

“For the 30 local government areas of Osun State, PDP candidates won all the seats,” he said.

Abioye apologised to the media for the commission’s failure to provide accreditation tags for election coverage.

He alleged that security agencies sealed the commission’s office, where the materials were kept.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s main opposition had earlier announced its withdrawal from the election.

The withdrawal was contained in a letter dated Feb. 17, signed by APC State Secretary Alao Kamoru, and addressed to the Secretary of OSSIEC.

A copy of the letter obtained by NAN stated that APC would not participate, citing the Feb. 10 Court of Appeal ruling in Akure reinstating its sacked officials.
