Cross River LGA agog as DisCo restores power after 15 years of darkness

Cross River LGA agog – The Port Harcourt Electricity…
The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) has restored power supply to Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River after 15 years of darkness.
The people commended Senator Bassey Otu‘s administration for keeping to his campaign promise of restoring the power supply to the council when elected.
Innocent Inaku, PHEDC Branch Manager for Cross River North and Central, particularly commended Governor Otu for the feat.
He said that the Area was thrown into darkness for such a long period due to vandalism and obsolete power infrastructure.
“The whole of Bekwarra has been in darkness for more than a decade and the governor directed the state rural electrification agency to develop a plan of action to reconnect and rehabilitate the power network in phases,” Inaku explained.
According to him, the power supply has not been restored to the entire council area, noting that this will be gradual.
“As part of the project’s first phase, six transformers have been provided in key locations across Bekwarra, including Ijibor, by the roadside, the Catholic Church, Ijibor.
Ugboro, St. Augustine Primary School, Ukpa, St Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Upa, Afrike Community, Afrike, number one
“Two of the six transformers, those at the Catholic Church in Ijibo and Ugboro have already been energised, bringing electricity back to parts of the community.
“However, the work is not without its challenges. After such a long time without power, there are bound to be network issues as we energise the transformers.
“We are addressing these issues in phases to ensure long-term reliability.
“Another challenge is the lack of a local transmission station. We depend on the supply from Abakaliki in Ebonyi state, which makes the process slower.
“Despite these obstacles, the project is moving forward. Once the initial six transformers are fully operational, the next phase will extend supply to communities such as Anyekam, Ibiaragidi, Begam, and Abuchiche,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Ada Bekwarra (traditional head) of the council area, Signor Omang, has described the governor as a “God-sent leader.”
He said that the restoration of the power supply to the local government would help improve the economy of the area as well as the quality of life.
“I want to particularly appreciate the governor for heeding our cry after I had led a delegation to his office in April to remind him of his campaign promise.
“Our major concern was light. We also discussed health centres, water problems, and rural roads, but we emphasised that our priority is light.
“Bekwarra was thrown into jubilation over this light issue. For several years, we have been in the dark. We know the importance of electricity; it impacts the economy, especially for artisans.
“If you are a welder, a carpenter, or a tailor, you rely on electricity to operate your machines. Hairdressers also need light for their work. This restoration improves the local economy, particularly given the high costs of diesel and fuel,” he said.
Omang highlighted the struggles faced by local businesses due to the lack of electricity.
According to him, “Many people trained their children through these businesses, but the absence of light has forced so many out of business. Yet, in just a year and a half, Bekwarra now has light.
“This is a governor who truly cares about the people. Years ago, we were running from one official to another, even to the Minister of State for Power, but all our efforts were in vain. Now, we are finally having light.
“For many in Bekwarra, this restoration of power is more than just the return of electricity, it’s a sign of progress, a rekindling of hope,” he said.

A heated altercation broke out on Tuesday, March 25, between Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North and former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili during a Senate committee hearing.
The confrontation occurred at the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions session, which was reviewing a fresh petition submitted by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Ezekwesili was present alongside Abiola Akiode, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel, and petitioner Zubairu Yakubu.
Tensions escalated when Yakubu attempted to speak while committee chairman Neda Imaseun was addressing the session.
He was asked to mute his microphone, prompting Ezekwesili to intervene.
Nwaebonyi, appearing as a witness for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, interrupted her, leading to an immediate clash.
“Compose yourself and stop making noise,” Ezekwesili told the senator.
The remark triggered an explosive response from Nwaebonyi, who shot back angrily.
“You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here,” he retorted.

Ezekwesili did not hold back, calling Nwaebonyi a “hooligan,” further aggravating the situation.
The fiery exchange briefly disrupted the proceedings before order was restored.
In the aftermath, committee chairman Imaseun announced that the matter had been taken to court, abruptly ending the hearing.

Reps initiate process to make appeal court final arbiter for governorship election petitions

A bill seeking to designate the Court of Appeal as the final authority for determining governorship election petitions has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. The bill, sponsored by Nnamdi Ezechi, the lawmaker representing Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani federal constituency in Delta State, aims to amend Section 246 of the 1999 Constitution. Under the current provision, Section 246 stipulates that decisions by the Court of Appeal regarding election petitions related to national and state houses of assembly elections are final. Ezechis proposed amendment seeks to extend this finality to governorship elections as well. If passed, the law would prevent gubernatorial election disputes from reaching the Supreme Court. Ezechi, who introduced the bill in 2024, stated that the intention behind the legislation is to reduce the delays and costs associated with post-election litigation. The new law would eliminate the need for appeals to the Supreme Court, which has sometimes reversed decisions made by the Court of Appeal in gubernatorial cases. Recent cases highlight the issues with the current system. In 2023, the tribunal and Court of Appeal annulled the election of Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as governor of Plateau State, but the Supreme Court later overturned this ruling in January 2024, reaffirming Mutfwangs victory. Similarly, the Court of Appeal voided Abba Yusufs election as governor of Kano State, but the Supreme Court nullified this decision as well. If the bill is passed, it could significantly streamline the process and prevent further appeals, providing more stability to the countrys electoral system. The bill is now moving forward for further deliberation in the House of Representatives. The post Reps initiate process to make appeal court final arbiter for governorship election petitions appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
