Believe IBB’s book and follow him to damnation – Abacha’s grandson fires back

Raees Abacha, grandson of the late Nigerian military Head of State, Sani Abacha, has strongly criticized former military president General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) over claims made in his newly released memoir, Journey In Service.

In the book, Babangida described Abacha as his “biggest headache,” alleging that the former head of state had attempted to overthrow him in a coup.

This claim has sparked intense debate about Nigeria’s political history, with many questioning Babangida’s account’s accuracy.

Raees Abacha has rejected Babangida’s version of events, accusing him of betrayal. He has insisted that his grandfather was a loyal ally who, on multiple occasions, protected Babangida’s life and safeguarded his reputation.

On Saturday, Raees took to social media to express his outrage, stating that if their roles had been reversed, his grandfather would never have acted in such a manner.

“If the lifespans of these two consequential figures were reversed, this treachery would never be discharged by General Abacha,” he tweeted.

He further criticised those who accept Babangida’s book as an unquestionable historical record, saying, “If we consider General Babangida’s Journey In-Service (2025) as his self-written, self-describing Bible to be accepted as the truth and nothing but the truth, then any who believe it are only following its author toward damnation.”

Raees’ remarks align with those of his uncle, Sadiq Abacha, who has also defended Abacha’s legacy, insisting that history will ultimately judge him more favorably than his critics suggest.

FG counters Oyakhilome’s 'salt is good' claim, cautions against excessive intake

The Federal Government has asked Nigerians to exercise caution regarding their salt intake, warning that excessive consumption could lead to serious health complications.

The warning came from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in response to a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the President and Founder of Loveworld Incorporated, better known as Christ Embassy, can be seen encouraging his congregation to eat more salt.

To justify his advice, the clergy argued that Africans were deliberately made to avoid salt so that they could buy sodium-infused drugs.

However, the health ministry warned that salt contains sodium, an essential mineral that supports vital body functions, but it must be taken in moderation.

“The federal ministry of health and social welfare has observed a widely circulated video in which a respected religious leader discourages Nigerians from heeding medical advice on salt consumption,” Alaba Balogun, the ministry’s Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, said in a statement.

“While we deeply respect the important role of faith and religious leaders in our society, it is crucial to correct misinformation that poses a risk to public health.”

The spokesman explained that moderate salt intake is safe, but stressed that excessive consumption contributes to high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, and other preventable illnesses.

He noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a maximum of 5 grams of salt per day (about one teaspoon).

According to Balogun, research has shown that Nigerians consume more than double the stipulated daily sodium intake, adding that the ministry will launch the national sodium reduction guidelines aimed at reducing salt content across all food categories.

“Salt is not the enemy. Salt contains sodium, an essential mineral that supports vital body functions such as nerve activity, muscle movement, and fluid balance. However, the concern lies in excessive consumption, not in salt itself,” he said.

“We wish to state clearly: Doctors do not lie. Nigeria’s health professionals are trained to offer evidence-based guidance rooted in decades of scientific research and patient care.

“The presence of regulated sodium compounds in certain medications is not equivalent to dietary salt (sodium chloride) and is safe when prescribed appropriately.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released controversial social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), from custody.

In a video posted on Instagram by blogger Tunde Ednut on the evening of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, VeryDarkMan can be seen sitting in the back of a car alongside his lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, at the wheel.

In the video clip, the activist characteristically laughed off insinuations that his arrest was connected to an alleged money laundering scheme.

He said he’s spending so much on charitable causes that some people begin to question where he gets the money from, unaware that he incurs debt in the process.

“Anyways, we’re outside. With my lawyer, of course,” he screamed ecstatically. “And you know what we do: We can never get inside when we have our lawyer by our side,” he continued.
