Are Skit makers professional actors? Here’s what I think

Are Skit makers professional – The Nigerian entertainment industry…

The Nigerian entertainment industry has witnessed a remarkable evolution in recent years, with the rise of skit makers becoming a defining trend in digital media.  Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have birthed a new generation of content creators who produce short, humorous content that often goes viral. Some of these skit makers have transitioned into Nollywood, turning their online fame into big-screen opportunities. While their popularity has opened doors to larger audiences and more significant projects, questions about their professionalism as actors have sparked debates. Can the spontaneity and improvisational skills that drive skit-making translate into the discipline and depth required for acting in films? First, it is important to note that a skit makers’ transition into Nollywood seems inevitable, given their popularity and ability to connect with audiences. Producers often cast skit makers to capitalize on their massive fan base, hoping that their inclusion will boost a film’s visibility and box office performance. Films featuring these stars, such as The Uprising: Wives on Strike 3 (starring Kiekie) and Fate of Alakada (featuring Broda Shaggi), have seen considerable commercial success. Unlike professional actors who undergo rigorous training, study their craft, and often work their way up through years of theatre or smaller roles, skit makers rely heavily on their personalities and comedic instincts.  However, despite their success, people argue that skit makers lack the training and discipline of professional actors. Unlike professional actors who undergo rigorous training, study their craft, and often work their way up through years of theatre or smaller roles, skit makers rely heavily on their personalities and comedic instincts. In skits, the focus is often on exaggerated expressions and quick humour, which may not translate seamlessly into the nuanced performances required in films. Professional actors spend time developing their characters, understanding scripts, and delivering lines with emotional depth—qualities that many skit makers often lack when they take on film roles. The influx of skit makers into Nollywood raises concerns about the industry’s standards. Prioritizing popularity over skill undermines the professionalism of the industry. Casting decisions driven by an actor’s social media following rather than their talent can lead to performances that feel shallow or out of place. This trend may also discourage emerging professional actors who have invested time and resources in honing their craft, only to be overshadowed by influencers with little to no formal training.  While skit makers bring undeniable energy and relatability to Nollywood, the path from social media sensation to professional actor demands more than just star power, it requires dedication, humility, and a willingness to learn. As Nollywood continues to grow, striking this balance will be crucial in maintaining its reputation. Skit makers transitioning to acting should consider investing in their craft. Producers also have a role to play by balancing the need for marketable stars with the responsibility of delivering high-quality content. Finally, casting skit makers in roles that align with their strengths while providing opportunities for them to grow as performers can only be a win-win for both parties.

Iyabo Ojo speaks out after EFCC invitation over naira spraying at daughter’s wedding

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has confirmed that she was recently invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the spraying of currency at her daughter’s wedding.

The actress took to Instagram on May 6, 2025, to clarify what transpired while she was in EFCC’s custody on May 5, 2025

Good afternoon, lovely people. Following the recent media publication on social media and numerous calls and text messages from different quarters seeking to hear from me on the EFCC invitation and to ascertain my welfare, I find it expedient to release this briefing.

I recently had an experience with the EFCC in Nigeria after receiving an invitation letter while I was in the UK. Upon my return, I visited the EFCC on the 5th day of May 2025, where I was asked several questions relating to my personal bio data, career, work experience, and companies, amongst others.

Iyabo Ojo recalled how she was shown evidence of guests at Priscilla’s wedding spraying money, which they explained was a crime no matter what currency was sprayed.

She wrote, “The EFCC officials showed me videos extracted from my daughter’s wedding where guests, including colleagues and friends, were spraying the naira and foreign currencies.”

I was asked if I knew this was illegal, and I explained that I thought only abuse or mutilation of the Naira was an offense. The EFCC officials clarified that spraying money, including on people’s bodies, is prohibited. I was surprised to learn that spraying any currency, including Dollars, is also not allowed.

After questioning, I was allowed to leave the same day, but my personal lawyer, O.I. Salami stood in for me as I may be called upon again.

The actress used the opportunity to warn others, urging Nigerians to rethink the long-standing tradition.

Given this experience, I strongly advise against spraying any currency in Nigeria to avoid issues with the EFCC. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider this long-standing tradition. Let’s prioritize caution and avoid any potential problems.

Her post immediately sparked discussions about money spraying and whether the tradition ought to be scrapped or not.

Reality TV star and actress Alex Unusual has taken to social media to question the Lagos State Government’s recent crackdown on homeless individuals, expressing concern and confusion over the motive behind the arrests.

In a post posted on her Instagram story on May 6, 2025, the former Big Brother Naija housemate asked for clarification after reports surfaced of homeless people being rounded up, harassed, and detained without explanation or due process.

Can someone please educate me on/ explain to me why Lagos State is arresting homeless people? I’m confused, so before it saddens me or ruins my day, I need to understand.

Clearly distraught, Alex said the situation had already affected her mood for the day, pointing out the unfairness of targeting those without shelter.

In fact, it has already ruined my day. What is the crime? Not having a house?
