All isn't well with – Chief Bode George, a…

Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peopleā€™s Democratic Party (PDP), says all is not well with the former ruling party because of selfish interests. George, who made this remark at a news conference to commemorate his 79th birthday on Thursday in Lagos, said that PDP members and leaders must use the forthcoming National Convention to rescue the party. As a loyal party man who lives, thinks, talks, breathes and defends PDP, I have never left this party since it was formed; so today gives me a great opportunity to deliberate on the future of our party.Even as elders of the party are preparing to meet on Nov. 28 in Abuja to chart the way forward, I owe it a duty to declare openly that all is not well with our party. In fact, our party is derailing. This is unfortunate because the crisis in our party has further complicated the present tragedy in the socio-economic indices of our dear nation. ā€œI am raising the alarm today that our party is at the precipice of a dangerous looming crisis if pending critical party issues are not urgently addressed,ā€ he said. George, a life member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), said that while the party leadership was trying its best to ensure all members had a sense of belonging, some ā€˜desperadosā€™ were doing everything possible to thwart their efforts.Calling for a united PDP, George said that the partyā€™s founding fathers who had gone to the world beyond would be crying in their graves because the PDP has become ā€œa shadow of itself due to selfish interests of some membersā€.He described as disheartening and pitiable, a situation where some pretentious members, were already working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the build-up to the 2027 elections. They have one leg in PDP and another leg in APC. Such chameleonic characters are the ones trying to dictate the direction of this party. In the name of everything dear to our great party, this pretension must be stopped immediately by patriotic members of this party.Since the first elective convention of our party in 1999 when PDP was handed over to some of us as national officers, we have never had it this bad. ā€œIf the PDP must rescue Nigerians from the vicious grip of APC in 2027, this must be a major agenda during our NEC meeting in Abuja,ā€ George said. Expressing the belief that the PDP was the only party that could save Nigeria, George said that the party must be ready to seize the opportunity to move the country forward.According to him, the party must not allow disloyal elements to continue to use the platform for their selfish interests, saying ā€œdisloyalty is a very grave offenceā€. He added: ā€œUnless we are united, with equity, fairness and justice being the pedestal for any political decision taken, this party will be heading to disaster in 2027. If we want to win the 2027 presidential election, we should not allow ourselves to be divided and those with divisive tendencies should be told in clear language that ā€˜Enough is Enoughā€™.We must change the narratives now so that we donā€™t embark on a suicide mission, a self-destructive journey for our party in 2027.With the suffering in the land and the mismanagement of the economy, Nigerians are waiting for us in 2027 to kick APC out of Aso Rock. He urged the party members and leaders from the North to the South to use the forthcoming PDPā€™s 99th National Executive Committee meeting as a golden opportunity before the next general elections in 2027, ā€œto bury our differences and put on our thinking caps.ā€According to him, the party should do everything humanly possible to ensure that the PDP does not go into the dustbin of history in 2027. On the political crisis in Rivers and the feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor and Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, the PDP leaders urged Wike to ā€œcool off immediatelyā€.Urging party leaders not to treat Fubara like an outcast, George called on all party leaders to rise in defence of the general interest of the party and sanity. We should not allow the collective unity of this party to be fragmented. How we collectively address the issues at stake will be a major determinant of the fate of this party in months and years to come.We are determined to ensure that the PDP returns to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on May 29, 2027, but, we can only go back to Aso Rock if we are united, not divided. He urged party elders such as Bamanga Tukur, Jim Nwobodo, Ahmadu Ali, Prof. Jerry Gana, Jonah Jang, Peter Odili, James Ibori, former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo to rise to the challenges. The PDP chieftain also urged Victor Attah, Donald Duke, Okwesilieze Nwodo, Ibrahim Shema, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Saka Balogun, Ebenezer Babatope, Bello Haliru, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, Ahmed Makarfi and others not to keep quiet.George called on the Chairman of the PDP BoT to invite all the aforementioned elders for a meeting on the way forward before the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. We cannot afford to fail and disappoint our founding fathers. Let me state categorically that, Nigerians are waiting for us in 2027 but we must put our house in order. As leaders, we must not allow anybody to destroy our party because PDP is the only true national party. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was attended by some PDP chieftains and members in the state including the 2023 Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District may have begun recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as signature collection reportedly started in some areas of the district.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Wednesday in Lokoja that constituents gathered at various signature collection points across the five local government areas comprising the senatorial district.

Some of the locations visited include Ajaokuta, Adavi, Okene, Lokoja, and Okehi Local Government Areas, where residents were seen participating in the signature drive.

One collection point was the Ihima community in Okehi LGA, Akpoti-Uduaghanā€™s hometown, where people were observed queuing for the recall exercise.

Abdullahi Usman, a resident of Ihima, told NAN that he joined the process willingly, saying they had lost confidence in Akpoti-Uduaghanā€™s representation.

ā€œYou can see the queue of people dissatisfied with her National Assembly performance, especially following the recent scandal in the Senate chamber.

ā€œWe are sending a message to the world that we no longer trust her representation. Her actions have brought shame to us internationally,ā€ Usman stated.

At the Ajaokuta collection point, Hajia Rabi Mohammed said, ā€œWe want her to return home, so we can elect someone with a good reputation.ā€

Samuel Adamu, from Lokoja Metropolis, stated that the recall process began on Wednesday and would last two days across all polling units in the five LGAs.

ā€œWe believe that by Friday, March 21, weā€™ll conclude collecting the signatures needed to file the petition for her recall,ā€ Adamu explained.

He added, ā€œThis recall process is taken seriously. We tried to engage her repeatedly without success,ā€ highlighting the communityā€™s frustrations.

In response, Abdulrahman Badamasiuyi, a Peopleā€™s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, described the recall effort as a sham and baseless.

Badamasiuyi urged constituents to ignore the planned verification exercise aimed at recalling Akpoti-Uduaghan from the National Assembly.

ā€œWe want the Senate, Nigerians, and the world to know we stand firmly with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against her illegal suspension.

ā€œShe remains the one in whom we entrusted our mandate, and no one has the right to violate our democratic and constitutional choices.

ā€œWe hereby notify the Senate, Nigerians, and the world that Akpoti-Uduaghan retains our unwavering mandate to serve until May 2027,ā€ he said.

Sule Lamido, a former Jigawa State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has turned the call by ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai for opposition leaders to join forces with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of 2027 general elections.

Lamido made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Sunday, March 16, 2025, dismissing El-Rufai’s invitation as an insult.

His reaction follows a recent call by the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, who called on key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, to join him in his new party.

Recall that EL-Rufai, who announced his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, March 17, 205, made the call in an earlier interview with BBC Hausa.

ā€œMy wishes and prayers are for Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf, and all opposition leaders to come and join SDP, not to do a merger or to register a new political party,” he said.

In his response, Lamido reminded El-Rufai that the PDP, which he helped build, laid the foundation for the former Kaduna Governor’s political career.

ā€œThe party we formed, the PDP, is the one that gave birth to El-Rufai.

ā€œYouā€™re not enough to make us leave the PDP,ā€ Lamido said, adding, ā€œHe once said that there are no adults in Nigeria in politics, but now he is calling on us to join him in the SDP.ā€

The former Jigawa Governor further probed El-Rufaiā€™s motives for defecting from the APC to the SDP, pointing out alleged flaws in his claim regarding former President Muhammadu Buhari‘s purported endorsement of the move.

ā€œHe said he told President Buhari about his decision to leave the APC, but now he is saying that he is one of the adults in Nigerian politics,ā€ he stated.

Lamido stressed that the PDP had not done anything to force him out of the party, reaffirming his long-standing loyalty by saying, ā€œIf I was going to leave the PDP, I would have done so in 2014 when the APC was formed.”

The PDP chieftain slammed El-Rufai’s leadership style, saying leadership is not about anger or selfish ambition.

ā€œLeadership is done with patience and vision, and doing things for the peace of the followers and the country as a whole,ā€ he noted.

Lamido counselled the former FCT minister to prioritise patriotism instead of showing anger towards others, saying, ā€œWhat should be done is to put patriotism first, instead of showing anger towards someone.ā€

Members of market associations and numerous women groups in Kaduna State have reiterated their loyalty and support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani’s administration.

Over the weekend, the demonstrators trooped to the Kaduna metropolis in their hundreds to peacefully express their feelings about recent developments in the polity.

They recounted their alleged bitter experiences under former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai‘s administration and affirmed their support for Sani.

The protesters advised Kaduna residents not to be deceived into opposing the incumbent governments at the state and federal levels.

While announcing his exit from the APC, the former Governor claimed that his decision was influenced by misalignment of values with the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the protesters recounted their ordeals during the previous administration’s eight years, alleging that hundreds of market shops belonging to individuals were either seized, demolished or confiscated.

They said the situation triggered ill health in many traders and business owners, leading to paralysis and multiple deaths of their colleagues.

“Weā€™ve been in the market for over 40 years and have never experienced the kind of set backs we suffered under the previous Governor,ā€ Daniel Audu Maigari, a stakeholder of the Kaduna Market associations, has said.

ā€œA lot of lives were lost,a lot of finances were ruined by reason of his kind of policies. We are here to speak with one voice and say that anything that would kind of revive such kind of philosophy in Kaduna market, we donā€™t want it.ā€

Explaining further, Maigari said, ā€œthis incumbent Governor began by healing the wounds, the wounds that were really severed by the former Governor. Governor Uba Sani has been doing so,so very well and thatā€™s why weā€™ve been with our leader, Alhaji Abdurrahman Mohammed, who like Governor Sani, has been charting the right course, ensuring programmes and plans that will heal these wounds.ā€

He added that there has never been a time when they have had the impact of leadership in the Kaduna market like they are now.

ā€ Now weā€™ve lots of incentives, lots of policies that are driving us to progress .We are now standing with one voice to denounce anything that would reverse this,ā€ he stated.

The protesters later marched to the streets, hoisting placards with various inscriptions denouncing the previous arrangements and chanting slogans supporting Tinubu, Sani and the APC.
