Adesina laments Nigeria’s underdevelopment, 64 years after independence

Adesina added that Nigeria should be an inspiration for elevating the whole continent of Africa.
Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), has decried the state in which Nigeria is still stagnant in many areas of development.
Adesina said that after 64 years of independence, the country should be among the developed nations of the world.
Adesina remarked while delivering a lecture on “building a global Nigeria” to mark the 90th birthday anniversary of rtd. Gen. Yakubu Gowon in Abuja.
He said that before independence in 1960, the founding fathers dreamed of a Nigeria that would be the shining light of Africa and indeed the black race.
He said that Nigeria, being the largest black nation on earth, should carry the hopes and aspirations of all black people in the world yearning to become a beacon in the world.
Adesina added that Nigeria should be an inspiration to elevate the whole continent of Africa.
“Certainly, 64 years after independence, Nigeria should not be a developing country but should be a developed nation.
“As President of the African Development Bank, when I travel around Africa, one issue that often marks conversations is, when will Nigeria develop?
”I have listened to several leaders tell me that the rise of Africa depends on the rise of Nigeria,” he said.
He cited the instance of Saudi Arabia which set the pace of development within the Gulf region, leading the development of United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait, which had risen to become global giants.
He said that Nigeria needed to develop faster for Africa to develop, adding that Nigeria could not remain a disappointment to the African continent as history was beckoning on the country.
“When the Gulf region was to develop, it took Saudi Arabia to set the pace.
“Today, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait, each of these nations have risen to become global giants.
“When Europe had to develop, it needed Germany, the United Kingdom and France to spur the growth across the continent,” he said.
According to Adesina, when Asia had to develop, it took China, Japan, and South Korea, to spark even wider growth from Singapore to India, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
“For Africa to develop, it needs Nigeria to develop faster. History beckons on Nigeria and we cannot disappoint,” he said.
The AfDB boss said that it was his dream to see a better tomorrow for the country,
He called on leaders to start with a poverty-free nation, adding that poverty is particularly extreme in rural areas where millions of people have been forgotten and abandoned.
“Today, poverty is extremely pervasive in Nigeria. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) 2022 estimated that 63 percent of persons living in Nigeria (133 million people) are multi-dimensionally poor.
“It also states that over half of the population of Nigeria cook with dung, wood or charcoal rather than cleaner energy.
“High deprivations are also apparent nationally in sanitation, healthcare, food security, and housing,“ he said.
He said that the resultant effects of poverty were the prevailing kidnapping, drug abuse, banditry, and social vices among the Nigerian youths.
“To address the situation, urgent and comprehensive efforts are needed to restore security and order, to protect lives, property, and farmlands, and to restore normalcy to traumatized zones, towns, villages, and communities.
“To stabilize and restore economic fortunes, education, health, social protection and jobs for youth programs must be prioritized.
“Simultaneously, we must decisively tackle and reduce the burgeoning numbers of out-of-school children,” he said.

DSS, NIA launch investigation into Natasha’s attendance at IPU meeting

The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the attendance of suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the recent Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York, an event she claims has now put her at risk of arrest upon her return to Nigeria.
According to Premium Times, government sources revealed that Akpoti-Uduaghan attended the event without undergoing the required nomination process.
The Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are reportedly leading the probe to determine how she gained access to the meeting and whether any individuals or organizations facilitated her participation.
Calls for an investigation intensified after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s speech at the IPU on March 11, where she alleged that she was being persecuted in Nigeria for rejecting sexual advances from Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

She also acknowledged that, following her suspension, her participation in the meeting was unauthorized.
Speaking with Premium Times on Sunday, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed she had received indications that she might be arrested upon her return to Abuja.
“… I’m aware there are plans underway to have me arrested as soon as I arrive Abuja,” she said.
She further alleged that Nigerian officials attempted to remove her from the United Nations premises following her speech.
“The Senate President Akpabio sent three staff headed by the Chargé D’Affaires of the Nigerian embassy in New York to evacuate me from the United Nations premises right after my speech. I was rescued by parliamentarians from other countries and the security.”
Government sources stated that the investigation would focus on verifying whether she obtained the necessary credentials, whether external parties assisted her, and whether her statements misrepresented Nigeria’s interests.
Addressing how she was able to attend the IPU meeting despite not being an official delegate, Akpoti-Uduaghan explained:

“I registered online as a senator. The suspension does not remove my legitimacy as a senator. I registered online and got a pass.”
“I attended the same programme last year and was already on the mailing list. After I got a pass, I bought my own ticket and funded my trip and participation at the event.”

Police rescue four kidnap victims, kill notorious kingpin, six others in Abia, Nasarawa

Police operatives in Abia and Nasarawa states have rescued four kidnapped victims and neutralised seven criminals, including a notorious kidnapping kingpin known as ‘Honor’, during separate operations.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer on Sunday, the operations also led to the recovery of several arms and ammunition, while some suspects escaped with gunshot wounds.
In Abia State, police received reports on 9 March 2025 that four individuals had been kidnapped while driving their Toyota RAV4 along New Umuahia Road, Obingwa. Acting on intelligence, the command’s tactical team stormed a three-bedroom bungalow in Osokwa, Osisioma LGA, on 14 March, where the victims were being held.
A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the neutralisation of six kidnappers. The victims were rescued unharmed, and security operatives recovered two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 34 rounds of live ammunition. The rescued individuals were later taken to the police hospital for medical attention.
In a separate operation in Nasarawa State, a joint team of police officers, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes tracked down the wanted kidnapper ‘Honor’ in Akwanga. He was intercepted near Akwanga Central Mosque while attempting to flee on a motorcycle.
The suspect resisted arrest, brandishing a firearm, but was swiftly neutralised. Security operatives recovered a Beretta pistol and 12 rounds of 9mm live ammunition. One accomplice managed to escape with gunshot wounds, and a manhunt is underway to capture the fleeing suspect.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun commended the operatives for their professionalism and reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to eradicating kidnapping and violent crimes.
“These recent operations underscore the resilience of the Nigeria Police Force in combating criminality. We remain dedicated to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety of all citizens,” the IGP stated.
