Four Vessels Arrive with 123.4 Million Litres of Petrol to Boost Nigeria’s Fuel Supply. Between Friday, October 18, and Sunday, October 20, four vessels carrying a total of 123.4 million litres of imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, arrived at Nigerian seaports. This delivery is expected to enhance fuel availability nationwide.
Documents from the Nigerian Port Authority revealed that the vessels berthed at two key seaports in Lagos and Calabar. The importation supports earlier reports that fuel dealers were bringing in PMS to supplement supply from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which had been producing less than the anticipated 25 million litres per day.
The vessels delivered 92,000 metric tonnes of fuel, with the first arriving at Apapa Port in Lagos on Friday, October 18. Subsequent shipments were made to both the Apapa and Calabar ports. Industry sources have indicated that while the Dangote Refinery produces about 10 million litres daily, this has proven insufficient to meet domestic demand.
This latest import follows a previous delivery of 141 million litres of petrol in September, after a price hike on PMS from the Dangote Refinery. According to market insiders, the deregulation of the downstream oil sector has enabled more flexibility in importing PMS.
All imported petrol must undergo rigorous testing by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to ensure compliance with national standards. George Ene-Ita, spokesperson for the NMDPRA, confirmed that any imported PMS must pass multiple tests at both the origin and destination ports before it can be released to the market.
The fuel shipments are expected to help stabilize supply in Nigeria amidst ongoing challenges in meeting the country’s fuel demands.
