TikTok Removes Over 2.1 Million Videos in Nigeria for Violating Guidelines. TikTok has announced the removal of more than 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 for violating its community guidelines. This action is part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to enhance content moderation and ensure a safer environment for its users.
According to the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report released on Tuesday, the removed videos accounted for less than 1% of all uploads in Nigeria during the period. The report highlighted that 99.1% of these videos were proactively removed before being flagged by users, with 90.7% taken down within 24 hours of their upload. This demonstrates TikTok’s commitment to addressing harmful content swiftly and maintaining a safer platform for Nigerian users.
The Chinese-owned video-sharing platform assured that it will continue investing in advanced technologies to improve content moderation and better understand potential risks, reinforcing its dedication to transparency and user safety in Nigeria and globally.
On a global scale, TikTok removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million of those removals achieved through automated systems. “With a proactive detection rate now at 98.2% globally, TikTok is more effective than ever at removing harmful content before users encounter it,” the company stated.
TikTok, owned by ByteDance, emphasized its commitment to providing a secure platform for its diverse user base. ByteDance, a global private company, is owned by global institutional investors (60%), its founders (20%), and its employees (20%).
