The temporary markets, which also took place at the Alausa, Secretariat and Lekki Phase I, operated on Sundays to provide selected food items at a 25 per cent discount.

Gbolahan Yishawu, a lawmaker representing Eti-Osa Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, said that the ‘Ounje Eko’ food market was suspended because it was abused by participants.

Yishawu made this known at the 11th Eti-Osa Constituency II Town Hall Meeting held on Friday in Lagos.

The meeting was part of the 9th Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting held simultaneously across the 40 Constituencies of the state.

Ounje Eko Food Discount Market is an initiative of the state government to sell foodstuff to residents at reduced prices across its 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The temporary markets, which also took place at the Alausa, Secretariat and Lekki Phase I, operated on Sundays to provide selected food items at a 25 per cent discount.

Last week, the state government announced its decision to pause the programme, which was in its second phase.

Shedding more light on the decision, Yishawu said, “The initiative was done by the government to subsidise food for the residents.

“People were abusing the system, taking advantage of it; and the government had brought the initiative so that people can buy what they need and then come back again.

“So, the subsidy the government was trying to give to you was being hijacked in the system,” he said.

The lawmaker said that the government was planning to redesign the process before bringing it back on board.

Earlier, a teacher, Tunde Aremu, who was among constituents that attended the meeting, had expressed dismay over the suspension of the initiative.

He said that the government initiative was meant to bring succour to residents following the high cost of living.

“This ‘Ounje Eko’ initiative, I see it as a relief because the major challenge everyone is facing in Nigeria today is insufficiency of food, no money.

“When we see a governor coming to our rescue in this area, then, such a governor should be commended,” he said.

Aremu, however, later thanked the lawmaker for the explanation.

“The response from Yishawu that many of our people abused this privilege, whereby, the motive behind this programme is for people to be given a chance to get food at a reduced price, but was abused, is disheartening,“ he said.

Aremu urged Lagosians to be constructive in their thinking and dealings so that the relief by the government would reach everyone.

He said, “In Nigeria, we always like to complain and condemn the government, but we ourselves do not know that governance starts from us.

“If we do not caution our excesses, there is no how government will be able to reach all.

“Nigerians need to be patriotic.”

Recall that the Lagos State Government, in March, successfully implemented Phase I of the Ounje Eko Food Discount Market across the state.

Following its success, it began the second phase on September 1 and scheduled it to run for eight weeks.

Residents across Lagos enjoyed a 25% discount on a variety of food items, including Rice, Beans, Garri, Bread, Eggs, Tomatoes, Pepper, Tatashe and Onions.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center (HICC), has responded to allegations of fraud involving ₦1.5 billion, maintaining his innocence in a statement addressing the claims circulating on social media.

Pastor Idowu acknowledged the widespread reports during his Wednesday, December 4, “Next Level Prayers” session.

“Over the last 24 hours, there’s been a lot of news about me on social media,” he said. “I just want to state some facts clearly.”

In his defence, Pastor Idowu denied any involvement in real estate transactions, emphasising that he neither owns nor trades in properties.

“I do not have any property in Nigeria apart from the one bequeathed to me by my late parents,” he stated. “I am not in the business of buying or selling properties.”

The pastor also dismissed claims of large sums being deposited into his accounts, particularly billions of naira.

“Someone said I received billions into my account. My account is public; anyone can check if I have ever received such amounts. I did not,” he asserted.

While refraining from delving deeply into the allegations, Pastor Idowu expressed gratitude to his supporters.

“I want to thank all of you that showed a lot of love. We are victorious,” he added, maintaining a confident outlook amidst the controversy.

He acknowledged the inevitability of further public scrutiny, remarking, “As you are reading it, I’m also reading it, like wow.”

Although Pastor Idowu did not address the specifics of the investigation, he remains steadfast in his declaration of innocence, inviting anyone with evidence to present it.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center (HICC), has been released from police custody following significant interventions from Aso Rock Villa and prominent clerics.

Idowu, under investigation for alleged fraud amounting to ₦1.5 billion, was held by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.

According to Sahara Reporters, Pastor Idowu was released late on Tuesday evening, December 3, after pressures mounted from powerful individuals, including presidential officials and influential religious leaders.

“Pastor Bolaji was released late into the evening after big pastors and President Tinubu’s Aso Villa intervened in the matter,” a senior police source disclosed.

The pastor was reportedly asked to repay the funds traced to his account within two weeks. The controversy stems from a real estate fraud scheme allegedly involving one of Idowu’s pastors.

Investigations revealed billions of naira linked to the scheme were traced from the church’s account to Idowu’s personal account.

Initially, police sources had indicated Idowu would spend the night in custody.

“The case emanated from one of his pastors who duped several people in a real estate scheme,” another insider revealed.

Pastor Idowu, known for his “Next Level Prayers” platform, has overseen HICC’s growth since its inception in 2003.

The church, with over 70,000 worshippers worldwide, operates in Nigeria, the UK, and the US.

While his release marks a reprieve, the financial allegations remain unresolved, and scrutiny persists.

Oromoni family mourns double – The Oromoni family, already…

The Oromoni family, already grappling with the loss of their son Sylvester Oromoni in 2021, has suffered another devastating blow with the passing of his mother, Rosemary Oromoni.

A family source disclosed that Rosemary succumbed to an illness linked to intermittent blood pressure complications in late November.

Her death follows years of emotional and legal turmoil for the family after the tragic death of Sylvester, a 12-year-old Dowen College student.

Sylvester’s death on November 30, 2021, captured national attention when his family alleged he was bullied and poisoned at the Lagos-based school.

Conflicting autopsy reports complicated the case, with initial findings pointing to chemical intoxication, while a subsequent autopsy attributed his death to natural causes linked to an ankle injury.

In April 2024, a coroner ruled that Sylvester’s death resulted from parental and medical negligence, exonerating Dowen College and its staff.

Five accused students—Favour Benjamin, Michael Kashamu, Edward Begue, Ansel Temile, and Kenneth Inyang—were cleared of all charges and released from a juvenile home in 2022.

The Oromoni family’s ordeal has left a lasting mark on public consciousness, with Rosemary’s death adding a sombre chapter to their relentless fight for justice.
