‘He can Play There’ — England Boss Suggests New Position for Chelsea Superstar Cole Palmer; England Interim manager Lee Carsley has suggested Cole Palmer could play a new position for the Three Lions in the upcoming fixtures.
England’s left-back problems might be solved by thinking outside the box, according to interim boss Lee Carsley.
With Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell unavailable due to injury, Carsley has not selected a recognized left-back in his 25-man squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland.
Instead, he’s considering versatile players to fill the gap. Levi Colwill and Rico Lewis deputized in the position last month, and Carsley suggests others could follow suit.

England boss backs Cole Palmer for left-back role
When asked about the situation, Carsley revealed:
“[Alexander-Arnold] can play there. Bukayo [Saka] can play there, Cole [Palmer] can play there, so there’s quite a few.”
Carsley acknowledges that playing a right-footed player at left-back would require adjustments:
“Obviously, you want to get the best out of them in their most natural positions. We know if we play a right-footed player there, at left-back, that we’re going to have to build differently and be creative in the way we set up.”

He also highlighted the benefits of interchangeable wide players:
“I think with the players we’ve got, we can also swap the wide players over so they’re on their natural sides, just to give the opposition something different to think about.”
Cole Palmer’s blistering start to the Premier League season – six goals and four assists in six games – means he will e pushing hard for a starting spot, perhaps ahead of Jack Grealish or Anthony Gordon.
