US, UK want to destroy our bond with Nigeria – Russia reacts to flag controversy
Published
In August, Nigerians in several states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) trooped to the streets to register their displeasure over the economic hardship caused by the reforms of President Bola Tinubu‘s administration.
The incident created a heated debate as some citizens expressed concerns over the possibility of foreign interference in the nation’s affairs.
The Department of State Service (DSS) later arrested seven Polish nationals in connection with the flag controversy, but they were later found to be students on a visit to Nigeria, which left all fingers pointing toward Russia.
The Eastern European country has been accused of a similar plot in recent political upheaval in the Sahel region, including neighbouring Nigeria Republic, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
Russia accuses the West of trying to destroy its bond with Nigeria
Reacting to the matter, the Russian government distanced itself from the flag controversy while blaming the US and other Western nations for trying to drive a wedge between it and Nigeria.
This is contained in a letter from the Russian government to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, released to the press by Yury Paramonov, official Press Secretary of the Russian embassy in Nigeria on Friday, October 4, 2024.
Moscow insisted that Britain, the US, and Ukraine were linking it with protests in Nigeria to sour the cordial relationship between it and Abuja, advising the Federal Government not to fall for the plot.
“In particular, statements by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Director of the British Council in Nigeria David Roberts, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Nigeria Ivan Kholostenko have shamelessly and baselessly suggested that the use of Russian flags during recent protests is evidence of Russia’s interference and have further warned that this could happen again in the future.
“The Embassy categorically rejects such accusations and reiterates that the Russian Federation neither had any involvement in the protests that occurred in the recent past nor does it have any connection to any potential future demonstrations or unrest.
“Russia has always respected the sovereignty of Nigeria. We strictly adhere to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states.
“By contrast, the coordinated media campaign by Western and Ukrainian officials and outlets clearly points to their attempts to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs and shift the blame for any consequences onto the Russian Federation.
“We greatly value the level of relations between our two countries, support only peaceful dialogue within the legal framework as the proper means to resolve any internal disputes, and once again express our unwavering support for the leadership and the people of Nigeria,” the letter read in part.
Paramonov disclosed that the Embassy had conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations to President Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s National Day.
“The Embassy also extends its best wishes to the people and Government of Nigeria for prosperity and stability, and we hope for continued cooperation and deepening relations between our two countries,” he added.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center (HICC), has been released from police custody following significant interventions from Aso Rock Villa and prominent clerics.
Idowu, under investigation for alleged fraud amounting to ₦1.5 billion, was held by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.
According to Sahara Reporters, Pastor Idowu was released late on Tuesday evening, December 3, after pressures mounted from powerful individuals, including presidential officials and influential religious leaders.
“Pastor Bolaji was released late into the evening after big pastors and President Tinubu’s Aso Villa intervened in the matter,” a senior police source disclosed.
The pastor was reportedly asked to repay the funds traced to his account within two weeks. The controversy stems from a real estate fraud scheme allegedly involving one of Idowu’s pastors.
Investigations revealed billions of naira linked to the scheme were traced from the church’s account to Idowu’s personal account.
Initially, police sources had indicated Idowu would spend the night in custody.
“The case emanated from one of his pastors who duped several people in a real estate scheme,” another insider revealed.
Pastor Idowu, known for his “Next Level Prayers” platform, has overseen HICC’s growth since its inception in 2003.
The church, with over 70,000 worshippers worldwide, operates in Nigeria, the UK, and the US.
While his release marks a reprieve, the financial allegations remain unresolved, and scrutiny persists.

The Oromoni family, already grappling with the loss of their son Sylvester Oromoni in 2021, has suffered another devastating blow with the passing of his mother, Rosemary Oromoni.
A family source disclosed that Rosemary succumbed to an illness linked to intermittent blood pressure complications in late November.
Her death follows years of emotional and legal turmoil for the family after the tragic death of Sylvester, a 12-year-old Dowen College student.
Sylvester’s death on November 30, 2021, captured national attention when his family alleged he was bullied and poisoned at the Lagos-based school.
Conflicting autopsy reports complicated the case, with initial findings pointing to chemical intoxication, while a subsequent autopsy attributed his death to natural causes linked to an ankle injury.
In April 2024, a coroner ruled that Sylvester’s death resulted from parental and medical negligence, exonerating Dowen College and its staff.
Five accused students—Favour Benjamin, Michael Kashamu, Edward Begue, Ansel Temile, and Kenneth Inyang—were cleared of all charges and released from a juvenile home in 2022.
The Oromoni family’s ordeal has left a lasting mark on public consciousness, with Rosemary’s death adding a sombre chapter to their relentless fight for justice.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre (HICC), is currently in police custody over allegations of real estate fraud and money laundering.
Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) detained him in Abuja, where he is reportedly being interrogated.
A top police source confirmed the arrest, stating, “Pastor Bolaji Idowu, popularly known as the ‘Next-Level Prayer Conference’ pastor, is under investigation for alleged fraudulent real estate activities and money laundering.”
Another source added, “He is at the FCID Abuja as we speak.”
Pastor Idowu founded the church in December 2003. Over the years, HICC has grown significantly, establishing branches across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The church’s website boasts of attracting over 70,000 worshippers both online and onsite. Known for his “Next Level Prayers” platform, Pastor Idowu encourages participants worldwide to deepen their prayer lives.
The allegations, however, have cast a shadow over his ministry’s reputation. As the investigation unfolds, the case has sparked widespread curiosity and concern among the church’s large congregation and the general public.
The police have yet to release an official statement, and Pastor Idowu’s representatives remain silent on the matter.
