Nigeria to lead $7.7trn global halal market – Shettima
Published
Nigeria to lead $7.7trn global halal market – Shettima, Shettima stated this on Wednesday during the Halal Economy Stakeholders Engagement Programme held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the nation’s economic and demographic size puts it in a vintage position to map out a vibrant investment sector for the global halal economy projected to reach a market value of $7.7 trillion by 2025.
The Vice-President noted, however, that Nigeria must first reassess its weaknesses and prioritise its strength to achieve this economic feat.
“For Nigeria to become a hub of opportunities in the global halal economy, we must prioritise our strengths and reassess our weaknesses.
“Today’s engagement provides a platform for us to collaborate with key international organisations.
“This will allow us to develop a comprehensive halal ecosystem and agree on strategies that will position Nigeria as a top halal exporter, targeting high-value markets.”
Shettima commended the private sector for its immense contributions to driving the halal economy, particularly in the financial sector.
He encouraged all stakeholders to partner with President Bola Tinubu’s administration to deliver the halal ecosystem.
“To ensure this, we must attract international investment by showcasing the vast opportunities within Nigeria’s halal sector through investor summits, roadshows, and business matchmaking events.
“The expansion of regional trade, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), also provides us with a pathway to become a leading supplier of halal goods and services across Africa.
“Therefore, we must increase public awareness through strategic orientation campaigns, specialised training programmes.
“We must also deepen engagement with the global market to elevate the visibility and competitiveness of Nigeria’s halal ecosystem,” he said.
Shettima described halal as an economy that accommodates all actors and stakeholders.
He noted that the halal market holds vast potential that aligns “with the overarching agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
He said that lack of clarity and understanding surrounding compliance with investments in the halal economy had stifled vast potential in savings, business ventures, and investments.
Shettima expressed delight that in an era of knowledge and enlightenment, more Nigerians are now getting rid of outdated concerns and are, instead, embracing the need to have a say in how their money is invested.
Earlier, Sen. Ibrahim Hadejia, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), had emphasised the importance of the initiative.
” Nigeria, as one of the largest economies in Africa, is launching this programme to engage with the global Halal market.
“We are determined to position Nigeria as a leader in the Halal economy, not just in Africa but globally,” Hadejia said.
Also, Special Assistant to the President on Export Expansion, Aliyu Sheriff, highlighted halal economic potential.
“If we can increase our halal exports to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries from 2% to 6% over the next four years, it could boost our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 548 million dollars,” he said.
Sheriff said some of the key objectives of the initiative include establishing a robust regulatory framework for Halal certification and increasing consumer awareness about Halal products.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, said Nigeria’s domestic spending on Halal products and services reached approximately 107 billion dollars in 2022.
“This sector is projected to grow at a rate of 10.7%, reaching 180 billion dollars by 2027.
“This positions Nigeria as the 8th largest domestic Halal economy globally and the second largest in Africa,” he added.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, stated halal products are not just for Muslims.
“There are over 125 products that are produced in the Halal way. This presents a huge opportunity for rapid growth and improved competitiveness, enhancing our ability to export,” he said.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center (HICC), has been released from police custody following significant interventions from Aso Rock Villa and prominent clerics.
Idowu, under investigation for alleged fraud amounting to ₦1.5 billion, was held by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.
According to Sahara Reporters, Pastor Idowu was released late on Tuesday evening, December 3, after pressures mounted from powerful individuals, including presidential officials and influential religious leaders.
“Pastor Bolaji was released late into the evening after big pastors and President Tinubu’s Aso Villa intervened in the matter,” a senior police source disclosed.
The pastor was reportedly asked to repay the funds traced to his account within two weeks. The controversy stems from a real estate fraud scheme allegedly involving one of Idowu’s pastors.
Investigations revealed billions of naira linked to the scheme were traced from the church’s account to Idowu’s personal account.
Initially, police sources had indicated Idowu would spend the night in custody.
“The case emanated from one of his pastors who duped several people in a real estate scheme,” another insider revealed.
Pastor Idowu, known for his “Next Level Prayers” platform, has overseen HICC’s growth since its inception in 2003.
The church, with over 70,000 worshippers worldwide, operates in Nigeria, the UK, and the US.
While his release marks a reprieve, the financial allegations remain unresolved, and scrutiny persists.

The Oromoni family, already grappling with the loss of their son Sylvester Oromoni in 2021, has suffered another devastating blow with the passing of his mother, Rosemary Oromoni.
A family source disclosed that Rosemary succumbed to an illness linked to intermittent blood pressure complications in late November.
Her death follows years of emotional and legal turmoil for the family after the tragic death of Sylvester, a 12-year-old Dowen College student.
Sylvester’s death on November 30, 2021, captured national attention when his family alleged he was bullied and poisoned at the Lagos-based school.
Conflicting autopsy reports complicated the case, with initial findings pointing to chemical intoxication, while a subsequent autopsy attributed his death to natural causes linked to an ankle injury.
In April 2024, a coroner ruled that Sylvester’s death resulted from parental and medical negligence, exonerating Dowen College and its staff.
Five accused students—Favour Benjamin, Michael Kashamu, Edward Begue, Ansel Temile, and Kenneth Inyang—were cleared of all charges and released from a juvenile home in 2022.
The Oromoni family’s ordeal has left a lasting mark on public consciousness, with Rosemary’s death adding a sombre chapter to their relentless fight for justice.

Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre (HICC), is currently in police custody over allegations of real estate fraud and money laundering.
Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) detained him in Abuja, where he is reportedly being interrogated.
A top police source confirmed the arrest, stating, “Pastor Bolaji Idowu, popularly known as the ‘Next-Level Prayer Conference’ pastor, is under investigation for alleged fraudulent real estate activities and money laundering.”
Another source added, “He is at the FCID Abuja as we speak.”
Pastor Idowu founded the church in December 2003. Over the years, HICC has grown significantly, establishing branches across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The church’s website boasts of attracting over 70,000 worshippers both online and onsite. Known for his “Next Level Prayers” platform, Pastor Idowu encourages participants worldwide to deepen their prayer lives.
The allegations, however, have cast a shadow over his ministry’s reputation. As the investigation unfolds, the case has sparked widespread curiosity and concern among the church’s large congregation and the general public.
The police have yet to release an official statement, and Pastor Idowu’s representatives remain silent on the matter.
