US court orders FBI, DEA to release records on Tinubu’s drug probe

A U.S. federal court has ordered top American law enforcement agencies to release confidential information relating to a purported drug-related investigation involving Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu in the 1990s.
Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled on Tuesday that the FBI and DEA’s refusal to confirm or deny the existence of such records.
The records, known as a “Glomar response,” were “neither logical nor plausible.”
The ruling followed a lawsuit filed by American activist Aaron Greenspan under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Greenspan had requested documents from the FBI, DEA, IRS, CIA, Department of State, and the Executive Office of the U.S.

Attorneys relating to investigations allegedly involving Tinubu, Abiodun Agbele, and others linked to a Chicago heroin ring in the early 1990s.
Despite filing 12 FOIA requests between 2022 and 2023, all agencies declined to release information. Greenspan sued in June 2023 to challenge the refusals.
He argued that Tinubu and Agbele had been officially acknowledged as subjects of investigations and that the public interest outweighed any privacy concerns. “The plaintiffs’ argument [is] that (1) DEA has officially confirmed investigations of Agbele… (2) the FBI and DEA have both officially confirmed investigations of Tinubu… [and] (3) any privacy interests… are overcome by public interest,” the ruling noted.
Judge Howell agreed in part, stating the FBI and DEA had previously acknowledged Tinubu’s involvement. “The claim that the Glomar responses were necessary to protect this information… is at this point neither logical nor plausible,” she ruled.

The court, however, upheld the CIA’s right to withhold information, noting that Greenspan had not proven the agency officially acknowledged any records.
The case draws attention back to Tinubu’s controversial past in the U.S. In 1993, he reportedly forfeited $460,000 to the U.S. government after authorities linked the funds to narcotics trafficking, though he was not charged with a crime.
Documents submitted in court include a verified complaint filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in July 1993, seeking the forfeiture of Tinubu’s funds. An affidavit by IRS Special Agent Kevin Moss described how Agbele was arrested after selling heroin to an undercover agent. He later cooperated with authorities, linking other individuals, including Tinubu and Mueez Akande, to the drug network.
“Agbele identified Akande as his uncle and said he provided him an apartment in Hammond, Indiana,” the affidavit read, citing DEA sources. It also said Tinubu’s bank accounts were flagged during the money-laundering probe into the heroin ring.
“There is probable cause to believe that funds in certain bank accounts controlled by Bola Tinubu… represent proceeds of drug trafficking,” Moss stated.
Tinubu’s camp had earlier moved to intervene in the U.S. case, citing privacy rights over tax records and other documents. The Nigerian Supreme Court had also ruled in 2023 that the forfeiture issue didn’t disqualify Tinubu from contesting the presidency.

Following Howell’s ruling, U.S. agencies (excluding the CIA) are expected to file a status report by May 2 on the remaining issues in the case.
This legal push renews global scrutiny on President Tinubu’s past, especially amid previous challenges to his eligibility by opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who had flagged the 1993 forfeiture during Nigeria’s 2023 election dispute.

US-based activist accuses Senator Natasha of offering N200m to blackmail Akpabio

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central District, has been accused of a plot to frame Senate President Godswill Akpabio for sexual harassment and organ trafficking allegations.
This is according to a United States-based activist, Dr. Sandra Duru, also known as Professor Mgbeke, who posted evidence of phone conversations between her and the suspended lawmaker on social media.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Thursday, April 1, 2025, Professor Mgbeke disclosed that she has forwarded evidence of Natasha’s alleged plot against Akpabio to authorities in the US and other parts of the world for forensic analysis and investigation.
While displaying some of the said evidence, the activist said the conversations exposed the hitherto mysterious motive behind the sexual harassment allegation levelled against Akpabio by the Kogi Senator.

She showed call logs and conversations to counter Natasha’s claim that she had never spoken to her before.
Duru further claimed that, after realising that her sexual harassment allegation wasn’t getting anywhere, Natasha offered her N200m to accuse the Senate President of organ harvesting, linking him with the death of a young girl who passed a few years ago.
She called on international security agencies whom she had petitioned, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), to investigate Natasha’s allegations to ascertain what she knows about the murder of Umoren, having kept mute on the matter for years.
The journalist-cum-activist further alleged that the Kogi lawmaker was out to destroy men, adding that Natasha had revealed she had no evidence to prove sexual harassment against Akpabio.

“One, there is no sexual harassment of any kind; two, there is no evidence of organ harvesting. I told Natasha, you are a pathological liar, you have disgraced us, Nigerians. She said Nigerians were G and H – ‘Gullible and Hungry’ and you want to add to their problems?” Professor Mgbeke said in the one-hour, eight-minute broadcast.
“I told her to make peace with the Senate members, but she insisted that they want to destroy the Yoruba government. I don’t know what she meant by that.
“A lawyer that is very lousy and careless in her utterances. Natasha is not teachable, Natasha lacks humility, Natasha lacks moral values, she doesn’t care. If it doesn’t go Natasha’s way, you are her enemy. Natasha is on a mission to destroy men… I cannot watch her destroy our men, I cannot watch her destroy our sons, I cannot watch her destroy our girls who are following her blindly. She called Dr Oby Ezekwesili a useful idiot.”
Following a spat over the seating arrangement in the Senate, Natasha accused Akpabio of making sexual advances at her, adding that her ordeal in the red chamber started after she turned down the advances.
However, the Senate President has repeatedly denied the accusation, and both parties are currently in court to argue their case.
“The Nigerian Police should handle the case of Natasha and her false allegations. She said she wants to force the Senate President to step down so that they will have their way to remove what they call Yoruba government,” Professor Mgbeke continued.
“Umoren died in 2021. An autopsy was done, and there was no organ harvesting.

“I already wrote to the international agencies about a senator who claimed to have known something about the murder of a young lady, and she kept it to herself. She must explain what she knows about the death.
“She said the reason for the fight was not really about the Senate President but it is about the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that they don’t want Yoruba government to go beyond four years. She said no sexual harassment evidence of any kind.”
The US-based journalist said that during one of their conversations, Natasha revealed that she had been promised the governorship of Kogi State or the Minister of Petroleum Resources if she could accomplish the mission of getting the Senate President out.
As of the time of this report, Natasha has yet to respond to Mgbeke’s allegations.

NCDC records 832 Lassa fever, Mpox cases, 135 deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed the country has recorded 832 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and Mpox. Speaking during a press briefing on Friday in Abuja, the agencys Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, revealed that 132 fatalities were recorded from Lassa fever and three from Mpox. While acknowledging a recent decline in Lassa fever infections during epidemiological week 16 (ending April 20, 2025), he warned that the overall risk remains high, particularly in endemic regions. Cumulatively, as of week 16, Nigeria has reported 4,253 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 696 confirmed cases, and 132 deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate of 19.0 percent, he stated. Dr. Idris attributed recent improvements to intensified surveillance, treatment efforts, and enhanced community engagement. He emphasized, however, the continued need for vigilance and collaboration to sustain progress. Regarding Mpox, the NCDC boss disclosed that three deaths have been recorded in 2025two in Abia and Ebonyi States in week 10, and one recently in Rivers State involving a patient co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis. As of week 16, 723 suspected cases and 136 laboratory-confirmed cases of Mpox have been reported across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The national case fatality rate currently stands at 2.2 per cent. The epidemic curve reveals multiple peaks in Mpox cases, indicating ongoing transmission. While most states have reported suspected cases, confirmed infections are heavily concentrated in Nigerias southern and central regions, Dr. Idris noted. To address these outbreaks, the NCDC has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), deployed National Rapid Response Teams to affected states, and prepositioned essential medical supplies, including personal protective equipment and laboratory consumables. Five additional Mpox diagnostic laboratories have also been optimized in Bauchi, Kano, Cross River, Rivers, and Enugu States. Healthcare workers are undergoing specialized training in infection prevention, case management, and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) care. Community outreach is being reinforced through public awareness campaigns, media engagement, and targeted health communication strategies, he added. On cerebrospinal meningitis, Dr. Idris reported a consistent decline in new cases and fatalities over the last three weeks. He attributed the improvement to effective vaccination, early treatment, and adaptive surveillance strategies tailored to real-time data. Although the situation remains serious, strong national and state-level coordination is showing positive results. The response will continue until full containment is achieved and states take full ownership of the CSM Incident Action Plan, he said. Dr. Idris also expressed concern about the rising Mpox trend since its reemergence in 2017, with significant spikes recorded between 2022 and 2024, positioning Nigeria among the most affected countries globally. He warned that underreporting and delayed data entry remain challenges that need urgent resolution to ensure accurate and timely outbreak response. A national mortality review for the recent Mpox deaths is being planned to further assess response effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. The NCDC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health through timely surveillance, transparent reporting, and coordinated national response mechanisms aimed at reducing disease burden and preventing future outbreaks.
