Masquerades lead protest against electricity tariff hike in Kwara

Two masquerades led a large crowd of youths in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, in a protest against what they described as an outrageous hike in electricity tariffs and the sudden reclassification of the communitys electricity supply from Band C to Band A.  The protesters, armed with placards and chanting war songs, gathered at Bareke Roundabout before moving through major streets of the town. Placards bore messages such as Omu-Aran Says No to Band A, Bring Us Back to Band C, and Omu-Aran Youths Have Spoken Loudly, reflecting the communitys strong rejection of the new billing category. The demonstrators said the abrupt shift to Band A had resulted in a sharp spike in electricity bills for March 2025, with some residents reportedly charged between N41,000 and N47,000, compared to previous bills of N10,000 to N15,000. The youths expressed frustration that the change occurred despite unresolved challenges affecting electricity supply across various parts of the community. They alleged that several areas continued to suffer from erratic power and that some transformers remained faulty or completely inoperative. The group refused police escort and the presence of security agencies during the protest, which they insisted was peaceful. The demonstration extended to several key locations, including Olomu Market, Latinwo Market, the Olomu palace, and the district office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) located in the Omu-Aran City Complex. Protesters also blocked major roads connecting the town to other states, including the Omu-Aran-Kabba and Omu-Aran-Otun-Ekiti highways, leaving many motorists and travellers stranded for hours. In a statement signed by the President of the Omu-Aran Development Association, Niyi Adeyeye, the protesters outlined several demands, including an immediate return to the previous Band C billing classification, the suspension of Band A tariffs, and a review of the recent charges to reflect the communitys actual power consumption. The demands also included the replacement of faulty transformers, cessation of consumer-funded repairs of electricity infrastructure, and an independent review of IBEDCs service delivery in the area. The Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Abdulraheem Adeoti, addressed the protesters at his palace, urging them to remain calm. He assured them that community leaders were in active discussions with IBEDC to resolve the matter and called on the youth to allow dialogue to take its course. The post Masquerades lead protest against electricity tariff hike in Kwara appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Just mention Seyi Tinubu, you’ll go viral

There’s a new shortcut to instant popularity in naija: add Seyi Tinubu’s name onto any wild claim and boom, you’re headline gold – no need for facts, proof, or even a little hint of evidence.

And the biggest cheerleader of this incredibly banal fancy is none other than former Vice President and serial presidential bridesmaid, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar!

This elder statesman, whom you would think ought to have mastered discretion, either on account of the high office he once occupied or his travails from the William Jefferson scandal to the intels affair and the detention and corruption trial of some of his allies and children, obviously has no chill, no filter.

Take the so-called “military parade,” for example, during which Seyi inspected a group of youths in Boy Scouts-like uniforms in Abeokuta. Before you could say, Boy Scout, Atiku, screamed to the world that they were soldiers on a parade, for Seyi. He thought and believed the worst, even at face value, when he just needed to look and he’d see those were only youth volunteers!

Then there was the funny, if not ridiculous, Elizabeth Jack-Rich drama in which scandal-monger Jackson Ude, imitating the former vice president, alleged that Seyi was having an affair with the wife of former presidential aspirant, Tein, only for the family to dismiss it as rubbish. But Jackson and others who aimed to trend on Seyi’s name had cashed out and gotten their trend.

And now, there’s the pièce de résistance: Seyi allegedly masterminding the abduction of a student leader after a ₦100 million bribe was rejected. Again, His Excellency, the former vice president, is leading the Twitterverse battalion to amplify what even the often critical socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has dismissed as “salacious, fallacious, and utterly fabricated.”

At this rate, Seyi Tinubu’s name might as well come with a “trending is guaranteed” stamp. Forget truth or proof. Even forget investigating. Just put Seyi’s name into your story and you enjoy 24 hours of viral fame! Guaranteed.
