Police operatives on Monday, April 7, forcefully dispersed protesters in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, using tear gas canisters to break up a demonstration led by the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society organisations.

The protesters had gathered in the Maitama area to demand urgent government intervention in economic hardships, alleged abuse of the Cybercrime Act, and the state of emergency President Bola Tinubu had imposed on Rivers State.

Demonstrators, some holding placards that read “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe,” were seen running for safety as police officers fired tear gas into the crowd.

In a statement released ahead of the protest, Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, said the demonstration was aimed at resisting what he described as the current administration’s “increasing authoritarianism.”

“We cannot continue to watch as Nigerians suffer under this harsh economic situation while basic rights are trampled upon,” Sanyaolu stated.

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and former presidential candidate, attended the protest to show solidarity with the movement.

The use of force by security operatives has drawn condemnation from activists, who argue that peaceful protests are a constitutional right.

Jesus Hates Poor People: Pastor David Ibiyeomie doubles down on controversial claim

Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries has doubled down on his recent controversial remarks, insisting that Jesus detested poverty and deliberately avoided associating with poor people during His time on earth.

The cleric first stirred backlash after stating in a sermon that Jesus “never entered the home of a poor person” because He “hated poverty.”

The comment triggered widespread criticism on social media and within religious circles, with many accusing the pastor of misrepresenting biblical teachings.

However, in a follow-up sermon, Ibiyeomie stood by his position, claiming the Holy Spirit personally affirmed the accuracy of his statement.

“Some persons called me and said the internet was on fire. I wasn’t interested, but out of curiosity, I checked,” he said. “Then I asked the Holy Spirit to tell me if I was wrong and I would take the blame. He was dictating God’s word to me verbatim in the bathroom.”

According to Ibiyeomie, the Holy Spirit told him that just as believers should not befriend sinners, they should also avoid close association with the poor. “He said, ‘I became sin for humanity. Do you like sin?’ I said no. He said, ’You can lead people to Christ, but you cannot be a friend to a sinner. So if a believer is mixing with sinners, everyone gets angry. In the same way, if a believer mixes with the poor, people should be angry,’” the pastor claimed.

He further argued that poverty is not simply a lack of money but a mindset, asserting that Jesus paid the price not just for sin and sickness, but also for poverty. “Why will you reject sin and accept poverty?” he asked. “You can help the poor but don’t associate with them.”

The remarks have continued to fuel debate, with critics accusing the pastor of promoting a distorted version of prosperity theology.

President Bola Tinubu privately met with suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in London.According to The Africa Report, the meeting was held at the insistence of Governor Fubara to work out modalities for returning Rivers State to the path of peace. This meeting would be the first since Tinubu suspended Fubara and invoked a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18. He appointed Navy Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as sole administrator. A Presidential aide who was privy to the meeting confirmed that the meeting actually took place, and added that It was aimed at restoring peace to the troubled oil-bearing community. According to the Presidential aide, The meeting was part of the efforts by the President to find a lasting solution to the ongoing political crisis in that region. It was also gathered that Fubaras estranged political godfather, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was not part of the meeting and was reportedly uneasy about such discussions taking place without him. However, Tinubu is expected to meet with Fubara, Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to chart a lasting resolution to the political crisis in the state. The new development comes after an earlier meeting held between Nyesom Wike and the Lawmakers loyal to him in the Rivers State House of Assembly which also took place in London.  The post Emergency rule: Fubara meets Tinubu in UK appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
