The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Bayelsa State Command, has refuted reports alleging that former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, was involved in the illegal detention of 15 of her former domestic staff at the Okaka Custodial Centre. The command described the claims as false and an attempt to tarnish the image of the Service. The allegations, which surfaced recently, stated that the domestic workers had been in custody since 2019 over the alleged theft of valuables including seven gold bangles, jewellery, five Samsung air conditioners, two sets of upholstery chairs, and six Samsung flat-screen televisions reportedly valued at N200 million. They were also said to be facing 18 counts related to conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit felony, and burglary. In a statement released on Sunday, April 6, Isari Gbosi Tombara, spokesperson of the custodial centre, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and being spread to tarnish the good image of the Service. Tombara also addressed rumours of a closed-door meeting between the former first lady and senior officers of the NCoS in Bayelsa, asserting that no such meeting took place. The inmates have also been treated fairly and humanely while in custody, the statement said. Their fundamental human rights have been respected. Tombara confirmed that the detainees had appeared in court on March 10 and 11, and again on April 3, 2025, with the case adjourned to April 17, 2025. He stressed that all individuals held at the custodial centre were committed there legally. No one can be admitted into any custodial centre in Nigeria without a valid warrant from a competent court of jurisdiction. On this note, they are not in our custody illegally as they were all accompanied with valid remand warrants from the court, he said. The command also reassured the public that the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Okaka remains one of the most peaceful in the country. Hence, they should discountenance the said reports as they are intended to cause chaos where none exists. The NCoS further reiterated its commitment under the leadership of Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to uphold the safe and humane custody of all lawfully detained persons, as well as ensure their effective reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society. The post NCoS denies illegal detention of Patience Jonathans ex-aides appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Woman arrested in Spain for selling her baby to a family for 2000 euros

A 37-year-old woman in Spain has been accused of selling her baby for 2,000 euros to a family in Cordoba. The baby is now in the care of the Junta de Andaluca’s social services department and the mother has been arrested by the National Police, together with four other people involved in the case. The investigation began in March this year, when the mother herself filed a complaint. She claimed that a family from Cordoba had kidnapped her newborn daughter and demanded a payment of 3,000 euros in order to let her see her again. The complainant said that, in November 2024, she had met a 24-year-old man at a party in Madrid. She told him that she was afraid that the social services would take her daughter away from her if she was born in the Spanish capital. The reason for her fears was that they had already taken the custody of her six other children from her. According to the version she fabricated for the police, the young man had offered to take her to Cordoba and take care of her until she gave birth. The complainant stated that she wanted to go back to Madrid with the baby after the birth, but the family in Cordoba assured her that they would take her there a few days later. The woman then claimed that, when she did not get her daughter back after a week had passed, she started to receive threats from the family in question demanding that she pay 3,000 euros for her month’s stay in Cordoba if she wanted to see her daughter again. The initial investigations found that the woman had altered her version of what had happened. In reality, the biological mother had allegedly reached an agreement to sell her daughter for 2,000 euros to a couple that was undergoing fertility treatments in Cordoba. The investigators found that, after being discharged, the complainant went to the civil registry in Cordoba with the alleged buyers. There, the biological mother and the future “father” were listed as parents of the newborn. The man then withdrew 2,000 euros from an ATM cash machine and gave it to the mother. After that, she was taken to Madrid by another member of the family. The police also discovered that the mother’s six other children were taken away from her following a court order from 2022, which found that the children were in a situation of neglect. All six of them were placed under the guardianship of the Madrid region. According to the investigation, the woman regretted selling her daughter, which is why the family demanded the return of the amount they had paid her, plus another 1,000 euros for the expenses from the month’s stay in Cordoba. The National Police arrested the mother and the four members of the family that bought the baby. The buyers were intercepted while they were on their way to a paediatric appointment. The post Woman arrested in Spain for selling her baby to a family for 2000 euros appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Stop de-marketing Nigeria – Segun Sowunmi blasts Obi for quoting poverty figure

Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticised the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, for allegedly de-marketing Nigeria on the international stage.

Sowunmi’s remarks followed Obi’s latest comments on the country’s poverty rate, which he noted has skyrocketed over the last 35 years due to incompetent leadership.

The famous author of “Growing Apart: Comparing Indonesia and Nigeria,” Professor Peter Lewis, invited the Labour Party leader to speak on “Politics and Change in Nigeria” at Johns Hopkins University in the United States on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

Sharing a summary of his speech at the event on his X on Friday, Obi, who felt honoured by the invitation, said he highlighted how a nation’s failure depends largely on its political leadership.

Ho noted that competent, capable, and compassionate political leadership, with integrity, will help nations to achieve sustainable growth and development.

Highlighting how Nigeria has failed to alleviate poverty over the last three decades, Obi compared the progress recorded by China, Indonesia, and Vietnam within the same timeframe.

He said the trio were categorised alongside Nigeria when the Human Development Index (HDI) was introduced in 1990.

“35 years later, three of these nations have moved up to the High category of HDI while Nigeria has fallen into the low category,” he wrote.

“Within the same period of 35 years, from 1990 to 2025, the GDP Per Capita of these comparable nations have all improved. As of 1990, while Nigeria had a GDP per capita of $556, China had $317, Indonesia had $578, and Vietnam had only $99.

“Nigeria, obviously, had higher GDP per capita than China, while Vietnam had less than one-fifth of Nigeria’s per capita. Today, Nigeria’s per capita is about one-fifth of Indonesia’s ($5000) and Vietnam’s (4400) GDP per capita and below one-tenth of China’s (1300) GDP per capita.”

Sowunmi tackles Obi over the poverty rate

The former Anambra State Governor further claimed that Nigeria, with about 50 million poor people, had the least number of people in poverty in 1990 than any of China, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

However, he said Nigeria today has more poor people than the trio combined, indicating the regressive nature of the country.

“While China had about 750 million people living in poverty, Indonesia and Vietnam had 85 million and 60 million poor people, respectively. China alone had about 15 times the number of poor people than Nigeria. Today, however, Nigeria has more poor people than these 3 countries combined.”

He questioned how other countries were able to pull their citizens out of poverty, while Nigeria continued to plunge, attributing the difference to poor political leadership.

“These comparable nations, and indeed other progressive nations, unlike Nigeria, have competent leadership with character, capacity and compassion, committed to prioritizing investment in critical areas of developmental measures; Education, Health, and pulling people out of poverty,” he added.

However, commenting on the post, Sowunmi disagreed with Obi’s submission, which he deemed as an act of de-marketing Nigeria.

He argued that the measurements the former Governor used to arrive at such a conclusion were extremely skewed, as they didn’t take into consideration Nigeria’s thriving informal sector.

He cautioned the Labour Party leader to desist from the trope of portraying a negative image of the country, especially at international forums.

“With due respect @PeterObi these measurements are faulty. Extremely skewed for those who manipulate these figures have no metrics to measure the informal sector in Nigeria. You need to stop this, especially at international forums,” he stated.

Sowunmi tasked Obi to place the burden on those manipulators and their neoliberal policies, which he said put Africa under undue pressure.

“You ought to place the burden on them and their crazy neoliberal policy and its deep state manipulations that put undue pressure on Africa! No one who wishes to lead a nation called Nigeria must be the de-marketer on steroids of the same country he or she wishes to lead. Stop it immediately.

“Are those you wish to impress outside our country not aware of the multiplier effect of their destabilization of the Sahel and its unfortunate consequences on Nigeria. You need to cut the crap. #NigeriaFirst,” the PDP chieftain added.
