Governor Zulum finally choose side in controversial ‘Tax Reform Bill’
Governor Zulum finally choose – Governor Babagana Zulum of…
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has openly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s proposed Tax Reform Bill, warning of its detrimental impact on the North and other regions of Nigeria.
In a BBC Hausa interview shared on X, Zulum expressed strong opposition to the legislation, which is currently under consideration in the National Assembly.
Zulum argued that the bill, if passed, would trigger economic decline, poverty, and insecurity, particularly in the northern states.

He highlighted its unsustainability, saying, “If passed into law, we will not be able to pay. If we pay once, the next year, it will become trouble because we won’t be able to pay again.”
The governor criticised the swift progress of the bill compared to the prolonged delay of the Petroleum Bill in the National Assembly.

He urged lawmakers to prioritise the well-being of their constituents, stating, “Do not betray the trust of your constituents by passing the bill. Opposing the bill does not imply opposition to the government but rather a commitment to protecting regional interests.”

Zulum also highlighted Lagos State’s concerns, warning that the bill could reverse economic gains in the South-West.
“We all don’t want Lagos to go backwards,” he said, underscoring the bill’s potential to harm all regions.
Appealing directly to President Tinubu, Zulum reminded him of the North’s significant contribution to his election victory.
He said, “We believe this bill, if passed, will completely destroy or kill the North as a whole.”
He called on Tinubu to show compassion and address the widespread concerns.
The Presidency, however, defended the reforms, with Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga stating they are critical to improving Nigerian lives and not designed to undermine any region.

DID YOU KNOW? New Pope Leo XIV visited Nigeria in 2016

As Catholics worldwide welcome Pope Leo XIV, a lesser-known detail about the new pontiff has emerged: his visit to Nigeria nearly a decade ago.
Then known as Bishop Robert Prevost, the American-born clergyman travelled to Abuja in 2016 as part of his work with the Order of St. Augustine.
The visit marked a historic milestone for the religious order.
“For the first time, General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine on the African continent — Abuja, Nigeria,” read a translated caption from a 2016 photo posted on Pope Leo’s X (formerly Twitter) account.

The image shows him alongside Catholic leaders, both foreign and Nigerian, dressed in traditional clerical attire.
At the time of his visit, Leo XIV was serving as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru.
Before that, he led the Augustinian Province in Chicago and served two terms as Prior General of the global order, known for its emphasis on community life, spiritual reflection, and service.
His connection to Nigeria stands out, especially considering the country’s deep Catholic roots and the long gap since a papal visit.
The last pope to visit Nigeria was John Paul II in 1998.

President Bola Tinubu congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election, saying the pontiff’s “message of faith and hope resonates across the globe.”
He also expressed joy on behalf of Nigerian Catholics, who now find a deeper link to the Vatican through the pope’s past presence in Abuja.
Pope Leo succeeds Pope Francis, who visited several African nations but never Nigeria during his papacy.
